    Bandsaw blade breakage

I’m sure we are all thinking of Daniel Oppenheimer’s paper on the consequences of erudite vernacular utilised irrespective of necessity :)

    Some turning heresies.

You can make jam with them, apparently, but the seeds will kill you, I’ll pass

    Newton metres… is torque

Running power from block shed to metal shed - 1ft gap between gables

How much power do you need? Can you put in an extension cable between the gables and just it in?

    Bandsaw blade breakage

PSI isn’t just for fluids, it’s a force over an area and will be relative to the material under load, so a smaller blade may still need the same “pressure” but as the cross-sectional area is smaller, that can be achieved with less force being exerted by the spring. You can’t measure it...

Green Ash planks - help please

The loft can work well… but if there’s worm or similar in that wood, you will be introducing it to whatever else is in your loft

Green Ash planks - help please

If they’re just felled, I hope you aren’t in a hurry. 2 & 5 look like firewood unless there’s something I can’t see. Is that some rot on 3 & 4? Maybe coat the ends, stack up with stickers out of the rain and at least you’ve got something to learn on for free. I’ve always found the better...

    New to the Forum

12 more months of getting to use CE for now, followed by maybe another 12, then perhaps maybe 12 after that, wonder if they will ever just admit it was a bad idea… no, I don’t wonder that.

Same as bolts, under tension means they see a higher cyclic loading and therefore more susceptible to fatigue, which will look like small cracks that start from a stress raiser like a tooth gullet and gradually grow each cycle until there’s a catastrophic failure.

    Table saw blade tension

Found a decent paper on it (eventually), lots of websites out there with lots of long words and not a lot of science, here it is… https://www.dynardo.de/fileadmin/Material_Dynardo/bibliothek/WOST11/23_WOST2014_ParallelSession_Optimization2_Weiland.pdf Looks like tensioning is rolling a seam...

    Table saw blade tension

Tempered makes sense, tensioned would be clever! There’d have to be some other part in compression, not sure where that’d go
  14. TheTiddles

    Table saw blade tension

When you say tension in the blade? You mean when it’s spinning and the mass is acting to pull the disk into tension from the centre towards the edge? (You already know you cooked it)

    Got any recommendations for squares?

Have you started to notice the trend? I suspect this is why there are so few people making here compared to how it used to be.

    Structural rigidity of bookcase

Hardboard for a back is fine, remember whilst it’s all wibbly-wobbly (that’s a technical term) if you compress it, nailed into the back you will be placing it in tension to move your unit out of square and it’s rather stronger that way. Your shelves are less wide, so that may be ok, (unless...

    Got any recommendations for squares?

Many options available, I go for what they call engineers squares as they are cheap and plenty accurate enough. If you have a stick, you can check square, just use it across the diagonals, no expensive tools needed. No matter what you buy, if it’s been dropped once, it might not be square anymore.
  18. TheTiddles

    Structural rigidity of bookcase

Yes, needs a back. 15mm is very thin for the shelves unless you put a chunky drop front and maybe upstand at the back, but you could go thinner and make them as torsion boxes but then they’d look odd compared to your frame, which I think could benefit from a face frame in my view. Out of...

How do these cuts not cause kick back?

To me it worked on several levels and was almost a reflection of the existential commentary on the human condition, how about you?

    Outdoor bench slats recommendation

Oh, and find a local refinishing shop, they can grit-blast and paint with 2-pac for less than you can buy hammerite, especially if you want the same colour as whatever bit of tractor they’re doing next
