    Staircase (WIP) starting to install

Heres an update on the staircase. The handrail has been fitted. I prefer to use a large dowel screw in the newel post and bolt the handrails on. The top dowel screw is angled into the newel post at the same angle as the handrail and the bottom one goes in perpendicular so it slides into the end...

    Staircase (WIP) starting to install

The idea is to have a finishing room underneath the mezzanine. This will be insulated and heated hopefully by a new woodburner with a back boiler so i can have some rads throughout the workshop. I will be fitting the stairs and taking some pics. I doubt anyone else would be able to figure out...

    Drum Sander

I dont have any direct experience with the sander you linked too but i do have a larger 36in wide model. They are good for finishing wild grain and thin components such as shop made veneer. They dont leave a finish which is good enough to finish straight way IMO as a bit of hand sanding or...

Morticing - any tips or is it just practice?

you could drill out from both sides which should be pretty accurate and clean up with a chisel Jon

    Wokshop stoves

I have a 20kw Hotspot stove and over the three years i have had it it has developed a bit of a sag which is around where the air inlet pipe is on the inside. This hasnt affected the stove but it looks a bit lop sided. Its fairly easy to keep stoked needs filling or topping up 3-4 times a day i...

Yeah the steels have been quite usefull just got to find the time to board them out. The steel was put in last week and should give an extra area of 30X20ft and a 10X13ft piece at the front. Cheers Jon

    Staircase (WIP) starting to install

Done a bit more today. The winders always take longer than you think they will a few templates and a couple of attempts at the middle one had them fitted. Had just about enough time to make some handrail up 65X52mm section cheers Jon

    Staircase (WIP) starting to install

The strings and risers and treads are all going to be painted white. The carpet is going to be a runner down the middle of the stairs so no cutting around the spindles. The customers wanted a plain look so there is not going to be any moulding around the treads or fancy brackets. The tread...

    Staircase (WIP) starting to install

I have just started a staircase and hopefully it will look a bit like this when its finished There is going to be a first step quarter landing then a cut string run and then a winder to the top. The architect has cocked up and there is a need for a full height newel to support the floor above...

What hinges for internally mounted cupboard doors

You really need an inset cranked hinge like these for an inset door. http://www.ironmongerydirect.co.uk/Prod ... s/12-045-D Cheers Jon

    Magswitch...any good?

I think a featherboard on the outfeed would work but the fence isnt high enough to accomodate one and it may get in the way of feeding the stock through. Another option would be a powerfeed on the outfeed but I havent got that lazy yet :D Yes furniture making. A largish framed kitchen with 40...

    Magswitch...any good?

Yeah i have the relevant skills to be able to get a perfect edge without using the gadget. I am presuming by saying 90% you actually mean 90 degrees Sometimes we plane hundreds of components at one time and using the magswitch 100% of the components comeout square and it eliminates any...

    Magswitch...any good?

I use one all the time on the planer for keeping stock up against the fence and ensuring perect 90 degree edges. Jon

    Anyone use the woodrat?

I bought one about 10 years ago but probably havent used it for about 7 years. I used it quite a bit when i first bought it for tenons/ sliding dovetails and dovetailing / combjointing. I should probably get it out and have another go with it or sell it. It depends on what work you want to do...

    Domino...worth it or nae?

I really like the domino and think its a great bit of kit. Its certainly worth it in a pro shop. It paid for itself after a couple of months and a couple of kitchen jobs and it completely replaces the biscuit jointer in my shop. Can anything really be justified in a hobby shop. If you want one...
