Total beginner just bought an old Arundel J4 I think Junior as its 55 inch long-some help please!

It's not surprising you can't unscrew the faceplate if you can't lock the spindle. I'll leave it to someone who's used one to to tell you how to lock it. Axi stuff is OK, also have a look at at Chronos and Arceurotrade.

"Used by all mechanics". That's a rather broad statement - I know garage owners whose mechanics don't use them. I asked what they used and was told mostly Laser - they're good enough and if they get stolen or lost it doesn't matter.

    US Election November 5th

First I've ever heard The Independent described as "centrist". The Times probably could be.

It's because we see him as a grotesque monster and a threat to democracy ... Democracy? At he has to be elected by the majority of voters, unlike our system.

    No Fault Evictions

If it were an opinion widely held by the experts in the field published in The Telegraph and you disagreed with it you'd say it was a lie.

Both MT1, yes you just get a round bar long enough to go through the hadstock - I have steel balls, about 40mm on the ends of mine for weight, but it's not strictly necessary (I have two to because the heavier one won't go through the tailstock.) As it's new to you I presume you have found the...

You can usually get a two or three foot long batten or even a piece of angle iron or something, drill a couple of holes through it and bolt it - not screw it - through the face plate. That leverage will usually crack it off. A bit of heat won't hurt. Put a washer on the register on the spindle...

    Suggestions for a jig please?

Make one up with scrap, hot melt glue is your friend. Anything to stop it's rolling when the bandsaw blade grabs.

The one in the red plastic case that's catch breaks off? A good set shame about the case. I have that set, a Kamasa 3/8" set that's good, thought not as good as the two Kamasa made in USA sets that I had in the '70s, and a 1/4" Bahco set that's OK. Also miscellaneous Britool, Gordon, Gedore...

Also, many people buy them through the firms they work for - it can spread the cost. £100 a tool sounds expensive but £25 a month for four months doesn't.

    unidentified jaws

Yes, I use Axi jaws and used to use Record/Nova jaws. These are different, the mounting screws aren't on the centre line of the jaw.

    Durable exterior paint recommendations

Mike Garnham (WH2). I believe it was Bedec Barn Paint he specified. I have used Bedec MSP on a steel garage door, it's brilliant stuff, but I'm not sure it last with wear and tear.

Any ideas what chuck this jaw would fit? There's no centre line hole for slide fixing.

A carpet legally lasts 5 years? I've lived in properies that had carpets decades old that were perfectly OK. The differnce being, probably, that my family lived in them and not some hoot toot that paid rent for a few months so thought they had a right to destroy them.
