    Restoring an old tool chest

Welcome - and a nice project to take on. One of keys to this type of dismantlement that is not always known is to tighten the screw first. My first go-to would be the brace and screwdriver bit going back and forth, and then heat with a reasonable (ie not electronics scale) soldering iron...

    electrical testing

Very many thanks for that , Paul - puts it all into perspective for all of us, particularly the routine for verifying isolation. At the wrong end of 70 I am still learning!! Rob

    electrical testing

I try to remember to use the back of the hand for this test as anything on the front is likely to make the hand muscles contract and therefore grip the cable. Ditto check the neutral too as that's the one that catches you out when it has gone live.

Re- a recent enquiry about equipment wax, op departed after one reply.

I've been using Forums and Groups probably now for approaching 30 years, and there's only been one or two occasions when I received what might be called 'abuse' - more accurately unhelpful comment! Rather unexpectedly that was on one of the beekeeping forums, which I did learn later had become...

    Polyurethane on Oak

Bad luck BBM - I'm afraid I guessed the tannin as being the source. I hope you have no other steel in contact with the wood. Tannin is oak's way of protecting itself against bugs - machining wet oak is a particular problem as all steel will collect a black surface. I had no idea chestnut did...

    **** beading router bit

A **** bead was referred to in a recent post and I had to go and check via Mr Google that I was thinking of the right thing. Anybody any idea why is is so named? I realised when I went back to look at some shelves I made some 30 year ago that the little feature on the supports is indeed ****...

    electrical testing

Fortunately I didn't learn the hard way, otherwiese I might not be here to write this. I am 'old school' and was an electronics engineer all my working life so should have realised what was happening. I'd been fitting a replacement CH boiler and was puzzled why the permanent live to the boiler...

    Portable MFT - my version

I'm sure that this has been addressed before but what actually is an MFT and what are the purpose of the perforations. My compliments on the table design and build, and I can appreciate its use for processing sheet material, but I've never come across a wood worker using a surface with such...

Suggestion: member categories on profiles (casual/committed/professional/etc)

'eight year old' for me was 70 years ago. I can remember the death of George VI being announced but I really doubt I wouod have known the prime minister in those days nor even what he/she did.

    Lathes shorting electricity

One of the problem in sorting out electrical problems remotely, particularly on forums as this, is understanding from the original post if is it the MCB (Mains Circuit Breaker) that has tripped on that one circuit which would indicate an overload, or if is an earth leakage in which the RCD /...

Suggestion: member categories on profiles (casual/committed/professional/etc)

The question was well worth asking as it has encouraged an entertaining discussion on the matter. In my case I am in the "just for fun" category - wish I'd thought up that tag myself!! But I do have professional support behind me in that my brother is a cabinet maker who to make ends meet is...

Workshop with ground screws and SIP structure? Comments?

Ollie - could you expand on the feet you are talking about a bit please. My brother is about to build himself a shed predominantly for storing materials in and is cutrrently talking about a concrete pad and I suspect hasn't any knowledge of these other 'feet' options. Thanks Rob

Ledge and Brace doors - where to start?

I have 5 doors out of some 10 in my 18th century Scottish cottage which are ledged - that is no brace and no frame. The others are intruders which would be a nice idea to replace. I've no idea how original they are. I'm not fully understanding some of the concerns expressed here about...

    Wooden Greenhouse

I checked with my brother this morning (my original post at 10.38 yesterday). His opinon is that cedar is the traditional wood to use as it goes a nice uniform colour with time; however it is not a structural wood and in reality needs to be increased significantly in cross section to obtain...

    Wooden Greenhouse

My brother has done a number of wooden greenhouses in his 30 yrs working life; I have a suspicion he would recommend douglas, but I will get that confirmed. As this thread has generated several 'me-toos' there's little point in 'greg' PM'ing me/him, and I will see how his experience can be...

    Wooden gutters.

Since 1975 I've lived in a Scots farm workers cottage and it was only this summer in going to sort out a large wasp byke in my roof, that I noticed a feature in the party wall stonework that I had never spotted before. I'd always suspected that the cottage had gone through more that one major...

What are the basic 'dogs' I need for my new bench? Theres alot of choice!!

You know I feel somethings are missing in my life, and it would seem that bench dogs are the latest. Now you would have thought that in over 60 years of wood working I would have either have invented such things for myslelf, or been totally unable to proceed with with a major house rebuild...

How to Season A slice from a Beech Stump?

LF - am I right in thinking that you can get portable microwaves for setting glue?

Startrite Mercury Pillar Drill - no power

I share a number of confusions expressed by others. I think from the 1450 rpm it is safe to assume it is an induction motor. But then the plate says 0.25kw (0.33 hp) and yet the voltage x current indicates ~600w which is a nominal 0.8 HP - yes, I know I've omitted power factor, etc, but it is...

Time to pack it all in....

I've been round here for a while but not active till recent. My specific connection to this thread is that my brother is a woodworker like yourself Zed - an extremely competent wood worker as I'm sure you really are. He has always struggled and now at 67 he is welcoming retirement. He did a...
