By now, Rattypuff, you will be beginning to wonder if this was really such a good idea !! :D :D Don't please be put off as you are the initiator and your partner will be thrilled with what you are doing for her - but just be prepared for the fact that she is going to have to continue...

What people want to see at Show Displays

Sorry Andy - you picked me up wrong; there was no stall that was committed to selling finishing products. The Glasgow show I was at a couple of years ago has several stands that were doing finishes and finishing systems solely - that was the point I was trying to get across, that you need to...

1 MT Adaptor needed, Update this might help you!

Peter I hadn't seen your thread before and was impressed with what you found, but that did lead me to wonder quite why ? I'm having difficulties seeing how you are holding the work-piece if the drill chuck is in the lathe chuck - and then I'm sure there's a perfectly good reason ....but why...

What people want to see at Show Displays

We had a wood show near Edinburgh recently which was a first and I hope was successful enough to be repeated. The demonstrations were good - proper area for them with a TV camera operator who could get good close ups of what the demonstrators were doing. I'm not sure if this is just a wood...

Please help?! Beginners lathe on a budget for bday present!

Rattypuff Keep an eye on Ebay for wood. If you use this search :- (wood turning, woodturning) -(elm,ash,yew,chisels,cd,dvd,pen,magazine,video) This means that you will get anything with 'wood turning' or 'woodturning' in it and the group after the minus sign gets rid of all sorts of things you...

    Baby rattle -what finish ?

Many thanks Chas - I've got all the info I need now and can go ahead with production ! I've discovered these are one of those wood turning exercises that needs to be done in the right sequence; my efforts so far have all ended up cutting the walls too thin - the last one did at least remain...

    Baby rattle -what finish ?

Chas - having introduced the idea of 'a soak in safe oil first', what in this context is a 'safe oil' and some guidance on the soak period would be appreciated ? I guess that any soak period would be subject to the wood type but if you have experience of this, some thoughts would be useful. Rob

    Baby rattle -what finish ?

Terry Many thanks for your second answer - I see there's a request for yet another contribution from you. It looks as if this gives me an excuse for a tin of your Hard Wax Oil. I must admit that when I started this thread I had no idea it would show up even more people facing father /...

    Baby rattle -what finish ?

Terry - many thanks for that. I'd forgotten you contribute to these pages and have used your company website Contact facility to ask this question, so no doubt the answer will be the same. However ..... your post is helpful in that it says what is NOT suitable (though Safe or Probably Safe !)...

    Baby rattle -what finish ?

Hi guys Adam - try this for guidance if this is the type of rattle you're after http://www.torbaywoodturners.co.uk/rattle.htm biggest problem I've found is turning the walls too thin. My third attempt (done following these instructions, though I preferred to use a gouge rather than the...

    Baby rattle -what finish ?

There's been a rush locally in baby production in my daughter's generation, including our first grandchild, so rattle making is the order of the day - quite good to find something to make a number of to hone up on the tool technique. I've seen that 'vegetable oil' is the recommended finish - is...

    3ph reassurance required !

Hi Scrums - what Wadkin lathe do you have ? I've a BZL 6 - I don't know all of its history but it has a modern 3ph motor and a Drives Direct inverter. The previous owner came to wood turning from metal turning and I suspect that he thought it was just a transfer of skills ! I had to make...

    3ph reassurance required !

"Excellent Chris!! It really is that simple. With your new found confidence, try downloading my paper on induction motors and each night before going to sleep, take two aspirin and read a page or so and see how you get on with it. Good luck Bob" Significantly better than counting sheep ...

Ah but the sparky wasn't a trained wood worker so he wouldn't know the blade was going backwards. Failure in Customer Acceptance of work undertaken !! Your fault not his. :D Rob

Which converstion would you recommend for my 3 phase graduat

Hi Miles Thanks for taking on-board the 'cautionary tale' !! I'm very much a DIY person - I've electronic. electrical and mechanical engineering skills so tackle these projects as projects that will inexpensively give me the end result I want - so time isn't quite so important. One thing I...

    3ph reassurance required !

"Pat on the head" granted - and a sugar lump too ! And it really is that simple !! What confuses people is the fact that there are three 'line' wires - but as you say, Scrums, if there are three wires wanting connected to something then what looks correct usually is. And as long as you take...

Which converstion would you recommend for my 3 phase graduat

Mark As someone who has done a conversion on a Graduate, I find some of your table entries a bit puzzling. I will have to say from the beginning that I've used Drives Direct inverters on my friend's Graduate and my own Wadkins so know that type, and I've also used a Speed Genie (all 1.5hp type)...

    Edinburgh/West Lothian/Fife Woodturning Club

Hope you get the job, BSM - what's attracting a Moose to Brechin Castle ? That's not part of the country I know but I see it on occasions on the batter up to Aberdeen and it all looks very nice round there. Rob
