    Parting Tool

Thanks John - I suppose from the fact that the books don't give any specific guidance then no specific speed is required. But then the books tend to lack guidance on sanding speeds and pressure as well and it's only relatively recently have I learnt about that ! I tend to use a fine pull saw...

    The dreaded SKEW !!!

I've had little difficulty using the skew for planing - 19mm oval with a longish bevel on it - but I decided to make a whole lot of santa claus' for Christmas and got going with the 10mm (flat with long bevel) skew for the body shape. On the 4th or 5th everything suddenly went wrong and I...

    Which tool?

I've never thought of using the small skew for this as I use a 6mm parting/beading tool that has been ground to 15/20 degs. across of the face. I would reckon this is better in that being a parting tool it is shaped to do the facing for the tenon better and for the dovetail it is so much narrow...

    Parting Tool

John Can you give some comments on the turning speed to be used please ? In metal lathing you turn the speed right down when parting off. Rob

    Bearing Change

Thanks Steve, I will go and have a listen and a feel. When you're dealing with something that is is probably in the era of 40 years old (unfortunately the serial number plate is missing), and has a long belt drive, it's difficult to decide if the general noisieness is in the bearings or due...

    Query about oils for wood

Bring this one back up to the top with a bit of feedback. The story behind the original query was that a couple of us as 'progressing' turners decided to do a craft fair. I opted for a number of utility type items including the garden twine holders mentioned above. The craft fair wasn't as...

    Bearing Change

As a guide to whether I should change the bearings on an old Wadkins lathe, what are you identifying, Steve, as showing that the bearings should be changed ? Rob

    Compressor query re. air grinders

Thanks Mark - that's the sort of guidance I was seeking; the tank is a fairly obvious one. I do have a couple of out-of-date scuba tanks which might be worth linking in; not that much volume but if I find a small tanked compressor cheap, it's an idea. Rob

    Compressor query re. air grinders

I'm not finding what I'm looking for in Search so if this has been tackled before I apologise. What I did find was an earlier thread that discusses these air grinders for piercing post591700.html?hilit=compressor#p591700 but there's no particular comment in that thread about compressor size...

    Woodturning on download

Well here below is what is said. I've said in part my piece. Can I ask the collective to say their's please. I don't know anything about publishing, but somehow I can't see the maths stacking up if one extracts the postage and printing on a Direct Debit annual sub of £31.50 against less than...

    Woodturning on download

Will do better than that, Blister - I'll send him the link to the thread, which will of course include your scan ! Keep you posted. Rob

    Woodturning on download

I got an acknowledgement from Mark almost immediately saying he didn't know anything about this discrepancy and he would look into it. That was Thursday last week. Nothing since then ! I'll give him a day or so more then chase him up. Rob

Keeping Warm in the work shop

Kym - I'm sure I've sown a seed of an idea ! I would look at it this way - many of your power tools you will only be visiting for a short time; I take it you have a bandsaw, planer and circular saw somewhere, plus the lathes. On the basis that I spend most of my workshop time at a bench and...

Keeping Warm in the work shop

I would on the grounds that if you do run into a condensation problem, it will be pretty obvious and the ventilation easily restored. Interestingly enough I was concerned about humidity in my new workshop and fitted a fan with a humidistat on it, and I've never in 2 years gone into the workshop...

Keeping Warm in the work shop

Melinda - I see your problem. Had you thought of doing the greenhouse thing and using bubble wrap as insulation? It's not expensive and several layers should make a considerable difference in adding insulation and keeping down the draughts. It shouldn't upset your landlord as it is totally...

    Query about oils for wood

Hi Janos I'm now beginning to wonder quite what can of worms I have opened; you don't say where you live but I guess from your name that you are abroad of the UK somewhere, and hope you understand the English saying about worms ! Thanks for your point about ash; the items I've made aren't...

    Query about oils for wood

Many Thanks, Jon - I went to the chemist for paraffin oil and was asked what is was for as it's no longer recommended for human use. They looked at me slightly oddly when I told them why. They had a couple of bottles left from old stock. I got a recommendation from this forum some time back...

    Query about oils for wood

Jon - many thanks indeed; that is an excellent treatise on the subject and satisfied my ignorance on oil types perfectly. I'm not sure that twine dispensers need to need to have a 'baby's bum' texture, so I will dispense with that sanding for this production project, but will bear it in mind...

    Query about oils for wood

Pinch me line - d*** you Blister !! I knew I should have used my other alias for here which is in Gaelic In this case it is ash, and here I've made a whole lot of holders for balls of garden twine for a craft fair - but the question was a general one. Rob

    Query about oils for wood

What's the difference between the various oils for woods - Danish, Tung, Teak, Finishing, etc. I've made a wooden item for Xmas presents and it could well get left out so if any finish an oil would be best but which one ? Thanks Rob
