    Grinder Help

Well if nothing else Rutlands do at least deserves plaudits for a rapid reply - very impressive. Sadly ! So I won't be going this way Dear Mr Graham, Thank you for your email. This grinder has a running speed of 2950rpm. Kind Regards, Luke Jackson Customer Services

    Grinder Help

I'm not seeing anything on the website about the motor speed. It would be nice if it was a 6 pole motor and running at around 950rpm, but I suspect it will be 2 pole for cheapness and running at 2,800 revs. I've emailed Rutlands to find out - will post the response. Rob

    Grinder Help

Hi Nev - thanks for posting that. Why do you say 'first grinder' out of interest - is there something you know about grinders that this one falls short on ? The reason I'm asking is that I have a pretty old 150mm grinder that is beginning to get unwilling to start. I could poke around inside...

    Wood Gloat

Ahhh - now south Ayrshire isn't that too far from Edinburgh and I have friends in those parts to visit too !! Hitchin is just a bit too far ! We cut a bit more of the elm today and there was a touch of green at one point so it may well be a wych elm. It wasn't Mike Poole that took it...

Follow up on Pro-Edge question. Fingernail on Tormek

Thanks Aled for joining in and giving the link to the previous discussion on this. I have the bigger Tormek so haven't really had all the problems you've had but I'm beginning to push the boundaries and will have to have a look at all the options you have employed. I made a base for the...

    Wood Gloat

Shame I'm so far away - could have very happily traded elm for robinia !

    Wood Gloat

Ahh, WP, that's the risk you take. (hammer) and why I suggested the topic should be sticky. Jurriaan is clearly winning in size and Neil in quantity - 'size of' and 'quantity of' is left to the reader's imagination. Rob

If you dangle your mouse over the photo it shows the title - so 'well id'd' by chance nothing to do with skill !! Rob

    Wood Gloat

Anyone explain how Neil has managed to post at 23.57 when my radio clock here in Edinburgh is reading 23.21 ? Neil - I've seen a Robinia tree in a park - I had no idea it would grow so large. Are they quite common ? What's the wood like? Rob

Follow up on Pro-Edge question. Fingernail on Tormek

Chas - thanks for your PM. As is the way with these things, the email reader pinged with your message just as I remembered that I had downloaded the whole manual off the Tormek site !! This photo is taken from Nick Arnull's DVD 'Yang' (strong recommendation for his DVD set 'Ying and Yang' - 5...

    Wood Gloat

This should be a sticky type post so that those of us who get a good haul of something can show it to all !! Here's mine ! It's Elm - English, alternatively Wych in that it has no beetle and was a full grown tree, but there's no green lining in the wood and the professional who identified it...

Follow up on Pro-Edge question. Fingernail on Tormek

I hadn't thought of your first point, Chas - may need to think about that ! I'd forgotten there was something in the handbook (where is my handbook?) on long grinds; thanks for that too. And I'll see about your trial idea. Thanks for replying Rob

Follow up on Pro-Edge question. Fingernail on Tormek

The question on fingernail grinding a bowl gouge on a Pro-Edge interested me as I have a similar problem using a Tormek. I made an adaptor to allow me to use the Tormek arm and jigs on a grinder white wheel to get the main grind, but with so many combination of settings on the Tormek jigs, I...

    Burnishing / polishing elm burr

Thanks for all your comments guys. Can I ask the question then as to whether one can achieve a passable shine on elm burr which does have significant voiding, or do I have to accept that the finish from say Danish oil is all that can be achieved ? I suppose this is where I was originally...

    Burnishing / polishing elm burr

I've just completed an elm burr bowl and have been seeking guidance on finishing. Mark Baker's book "Woodturning Projects" does a number of burr objects which he uses oils to finish and then burnishes with something I'd not heard of - 'EEE-Ultrashine'. I see that Toolpost stock this - comes...

    Grinder Help

I replaced the wire brush in my grinder with a white stone some time back and found it a bonus (I have a Tormek) for re-shaping. What I do need to do now is to replace it with a wide one - what sources of these are there ? Axminster don't say what the bore is on theirs - certainly I could ask...

    Filling Cracks....

The first and only time I have used filling with CA, coffee and sawdust it was entirely successful. It was a fairly complex collection of spindle shapes on a 40mm cherry shaft and one of them ended up where there was a knot. I was able to fill the holes and turn them out and sand to a...

    Another wood identification

Hi ****; As far as I can remember, I think that it was in the 1970's we used to collect the walnut's in the garden of my wife's aunt. They never matured as far as I know, but there was a point in their growth that you tested them with a long needle to ensure they were still soft right through...
