    Lazy susan WIP

Hi John I never followed it up I'm afraid. I'm bad at starting things and not following them through due to something else coming up - and now we're out of winter (at least the calendar says so!), wood turning tends to take a back seat. So wait till the autumn and it'll come back onto the...

Another wood drying question - 3 year old oak

The oak tree was originally planted over 20 years ago in memory of a teenage son of friends killed in a push bike road accident. The house changed hands and I'm now very friendly with the new owner who turned up at the local wood turning club a couple of years ago. 3 years ago the oak tree had...

    What Buffing system.

Hi Steve - standard speed for 4 pole induction motor. 2 pole = 2800; 6 pole = 930, etc. Anything more than 4 pole is a bit of a rarity now though as it is cheaper to use pulleys than make motors with lots of copper.

    What Buffing system.

Glad I found this thread - it's an area I've been wondering about for some time. Can I ask the question - what speed do you buff at ? I liked John's separate motor idea but worry slightly about how fast that must be going. Rob

Source of sheets of ultra fine sandpaper

Hi Eric - I've been warned off emery paper because of it's iron content and my understanding is that wet 'n dry is the same thing. Now it may well be that someone will come along and say that's a load of rubbish, but if there is any suggestion of doubt then I'll go with that for the moment...

Source of sheets of ultra fine sandpaper

Many thanks H.C. - a step in the right direction and if I can't get sheets or roll that will do. The half sheet sander I have is the clamp variety and isn't velcro compliant, and takes 115mm wide roll, or half a sheet ! At least any off cuts will be big enough to be used on the round stuff I...

Source of sheets of ultra fine sandpaper

I would have thought that Halfords would have stocked emery /wet n' dry but not glass paper - but hey it's always worth a try. I did think of emery paper but it contains iron particles and should never be used on wood. Rob

Source of sheets of ultra fine sandpaper

This is a continuation of a thread on finishing a 1 metre long burr elm plank. This plank is off the very edge of an elm bole and is extremely wainy edged. In sanding it I have found that the half sheet sander is possibly the best tool as it has a large surface area to bridge over bark areas...

How to finish a burr elm 'plank'

Ok - new question has come up. I put the board through the drum sander with 120 grit belt on it to get all the bumps and lumps out. It did a good job though curiously left fine sanding lines at near enough the angle of the wind of the sanding belt on the drum. In some ways these were quite...

    3 phase motor problems

Fred - can I add my pennyworth to what Bob is saying - he is the guru round here for these things, but one possibility may exist on your new inverter is that it has an auto-tune facility. My Teko has that. If it is like the Teko, the programming is done through 'Functions' (quite possible a...

How to finish a burr elm 'plank'

Some of us are lucky enough to have club access to nice things like drum sanders which I'd never used before but has done a great job in taking out the marks and wobbles of a sawmill thicknesser. I'm now going to the orbital sander and running up through the 240 to 600 or 800 grit to get a...

How to finish a burr elm 'plank'

Hi Eric - not really much WIP to be seen in sanding !! But the finished article will certainly be worth posting. Pete - from the round world aspect we tend to avoid polishing burr with wax as it collects in the voids of the wood. If hand applying is this less of a problem ? This sounds like...

How to finish a burr elm 'plank'

Thanks guys for your advise, and it's nice to hear your envy! I'll put in a plug for Jim at Scottish Woods in Oakley in Fife. It sounds as if I'd better not tell you how much I paid for it then !! Gloat. Mike - I had a fancy some half dozen years go to make a Vienna clock with a long...

Re-inforcing a piece of elm burr

Thanks guys - I've now moved the topic onto a new thread about finishing the piece. The wood throughout the plank is in good condition, but at this neck it clearly flexes slightly. My solution is to screw a bit of steel to the back while I'm hand preparing it and remove it once finished. Mike...

How to finish a burr elm 'plank'

This is a continuation of my thread asking about re-enforcing this plank, which I'm going to use for an old pendulum and weights clock mechanism. It's about 1 metre long and 400mm at it's widest. It's been thicknessed to 23mm rather roughly. The problem area is this, and I'll get round it...

Re-inforcing a piece of elm burr

Mike That's a pretty 'kewl' piece of comment. If it wasn't for the fact that the plank (if that is what you could call a bit cut off the very edge of a burry trunk) is out in the workshop and it being a bit stormy here this evening, I would post a picture - I'll do so tomorrow. Your logic is...

Re-inforcing a piece of elm burr

I had this idea sometime back about making a Vienna Regulator clock case and bought a suitable movement. My woodworking skill and commitment lead me into looking around for a simpler design than the traditional case with many examples of the wood worker's capabilities, so the project did not...

Finish for wooden door sill plate ?

I always think twice about replying to my own posts as it does seem a bit odd. Anyway I've now been told elsewhere that PU varnish and oak do not go well together so oil it will be.

Finish for wooden door sill plate ?

Hi Froggy What an excellent site - that one is definitely for bookmarking. Thank you. There are two problems with PU varnish - it takes ages to dry and I have had bad experiences before with it on floors. I can get round the 'ages to dry' by pre-varnishing and fitting it prepared, but the...

Finish for wooden door sill plate ?

The door that is in between the entrance hall and the rest of the house has had a temporary sill plate on it since year dot (when that part of the house was renovated !). In my retirement I'm gently getting round to addressing these 'features' that never got finished. I've a bit of oak spare...
