Chipped edges on new planes and do new planes need sharpening before use?

You went into a bit more detail.

Chipped edges on new planes and do new planes need sharpening before use?

I didn't get that. I just saw my dad use an oilstone when I was an 8 or 10 year old.....and trying to remember what he did 10 years later when I got my first tools led to about 5 years of frustration and self learning. The penny finally dropped when I remembered seeing him feel the back of the...

    Guilding

I don't know who suggested mixing Zissner and MSP, but I'm not sure it's wise. Zissner is hard, and, as far as I know, non flexible and non-micro-porous (vapour-permeable/ "breathable"). The principle qualities of MSP are that it is flexible and "breathable". I may be completely wrong, but I...

What are the rest of the drawers made out of, Bob?

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Well done Peri. If I say "mahogany-like" timber, it doesn't for a second suggest that I think this is mahogany. It might be, or one of the many tropical hardwood mahogany alternatives. Either way, you've got some nice wood there for no money and just a little time and effort.

    Olive coffee pot

Ebonised? Ebonising is a process which involves the timber turning black.

    Strong colour

Me? If it's blanked off behind it'd be fine by me. Otherwise, drop it 3 or 4 inches so you can reach in with a feather duster.

    Carpenters tool box?

Drawer. So insert a false floor and put a drawer or two in underneath. Make it of thicker timber. I'd also move the catches to the sides, and have some sort of recessed or folding handle to leave a flat top for working on.

    Strong colour

I'm curious about the narrow gap above the upper units and the cornice. Is this just as it appears to be......open to the back of the cupboard........or is there a blanking-off piece in there, joining the top of the unit to the ceiling? If there isn't, that's spider paradise!

    Strong colour

You can definitely be bolder with colour if your kitchen is about half an acre. ;)

    A Behomoth of a desk

If nobody posted work, Cabinetman, we'd sit around discussing bandsaws vs tablesaws, and what P/T to buy, until the cows came home. Some people think it's showing off. Others enjoy it.........you can't please everyone, but whatever, it's way better than discussing bloody sharpening for the...

Chipped edges on new planes and do new planes need sharpening before use?

I do appreciate the mods attempting to revive this thread by renaming it and putting an explanatory first post in place of what Seb left. Well done. I'm just not 100% sure that the new title reflects the contents, which was more about a chipped/ damaged iron rather than about whether or not it...

So, oil stones, water stones, or diamond plates?

Best looking (and sounding) workshop roof, under trees...

22.5 degrees for slate (natural slate...some of the man-made ones go down to 15 degrees or so, I believe). I wouldn't use slate under a tree, because it is fragile and difficult to repair properly. A falling branch would make a lot of mess, and leave the roof covered in tingles. Peg tiles (35...

Best looking (and sounding) workshop roof, under trees...

Well, for the best looking and sounding roof, the answer is thatch, in my view, by a country mile. You didn't mention money until the third paragraph...... :)

    Builders sand / sharp sand

Sharp sand isn't what you would use for pointing ordinarily. You need soft washed or plasterer's sand. Sand colour is independent of whether or not it is sharp or washed. It is solely a function of which pit it was dug from. In fact, it's more subtle than that, because even the same pit can...

    Repurposing a blunt file?

Spot on, and profound. I couldn't agree more. I make furniture because I like the process. That's also why I cut joints rather than use dominoes or the like. There are some who would buy that fantasy machine which you stack wood in a hopper at the top, press a button and a completed piece of...

Excellent, Cabinetman. Great craftsmanship and problem solving. I reckon this deserves a thread of its own in Projects, rather than being swallowed up in this monster thread never to be seen again.

    Kitchen dresser

I had 4 or 5 hours at this during the week, and then a good solid weekend in the workshop, so I've made reasonable progress. We left it at a dry fit of the two upper cupboards....... Having the upper cupboards in place enabled me to work out the locations and shapes of the shelves and frame...
