Chipped edges on new planes and do new planes need sharpening before use?

Suddenly, this poster's location has gone from Wales to the Hebrides. Curiouser and curiouser.....

I haven't the first idea what you are talking about, I'm afraid.

They can be up to 6 inches long, and baked iron hard. Never drive over elephant dung, because elephants eat acacia but don't digest the thorns, meaning their pooh is full of it, and held up at appropriate angles for tyre penetration by the mixture they're embedded in. Think blackthorn's big...

Yeah, you would. You're an American. A planer is someone or something which planes.

    Unwanted texture, help!

It might be worth your while popping a version of this thread into the turning sub-forum, because these odd timbers and finishing issues are everyday stuff for them. I doubt you'll get a better answer than Richard has just given you, but there will be people who have turned acacia. My only...

    What is this ?

It looks like a dovetail or box joint jig.

I rather like those knife marks.

Chipped edges on new planes and do new planes need sharpening before use?

Not sure I agree with this. He may be the best cabinet maker in history, but that wouldn't make his personal attacks any more acceptable. It also completely ignores the fact that there are many, many approaches to woodworking, all of which can produce wonderful results. Eshmiel...... surely...

Chipped edges on new planes and do new planes need sharpening before use?

I turned it back off to see what you were talking about. We have a poster intent on becoming the most ignored on the forum, and only here for a fortnight so far. So, he disappears again.

    sharpening brace bits

I'm pretty sure they're all for drilling into end grain, other than the reamer, of course. They look like small versions of the pipe-making augers that were used to hollow out elm logs to make riser pipes for hand pumping water out of a well.

Heritage glass? What do you mean by that?

Chipped edges on new planes and do new planes need sharpening before use?

I said for a beginner, and obviously, I'm talking about his videos because I've not been on a course. Any course. As it happens, I am tutoring a beginner, and he certainly gets more from Sellers' videos than form DC's, at this stage of his development. After a bit more experience, I'm sure...

Yep, the inner tubes just keep everything a bit more controllable. Obviously, you could just use springs.

Advice on Kitchen Cabinet Furniture Doodads

For the corner unit....I put shelves in the corner cupboards like in any other, but hinge the two adjoining doors to each other so that they operate somewhat like a bi-fold. This means when they are open you have a huge opening to get at the cupboard contents, for the grand cost of a couple of...

Chipped edges on new planes and do new planes need sharpening before use?

David Charlesworth, in my view, over complicates matters for a beginner, and is somewhat ponderous. He's great, but he isn't where I would send a beginner. You won't go wrong with Sellers. DC is a member here.

Be ware of youtube, though, because there are many more videos of people doing it wrong than there are of people doing it anywhere near right. You really are in the right place here, akirk, if you're seeking woodworking advice, and help in navigating youtube's pitfalls.

Chipped edges on new planes and do new planes need sharpening before use?

You know, I'm not so sure. I reckon he was taken aback by the responses he got, and he must have seen that he didn't actually know what he was doing with a plane. Now that he has one or two planes, and has had some time with a kindly forum member being shown sharpening and setting up, he'll...

    Kitchen dresser

I just drill out with a forstner bit to 3 or 4mm deep and fill with the standard 2-part wood filler (you know the stuff, like car body repair filler). It's ready for sanding off in half an hour or so. This is a more successful approach than knotting compound, in my experience, for painted...

Much appreciated, custard. My back is a little better now, so I can't use that as an excuse quite so much any more. I don't think I'm particularly fast, and I often choose hand tools rather than machining just for the pleasure...so I could be a bit quicker if I wanted. What I don't do, though...

The oak was planed and thicknessed before being hand finished (plane & scraper). Most of the pine is PAR, but some of the smaller bits have been ripped or re-sawn, and then generally hand planed, but some thicknessed.
