Lathe for chairmaking & more - Envoy, Herald, Axi 406

Is it possible to move this thread over to the woodturning forum or should I just repost over there and link to it from here?

Lathe for chairmaking & more - Envoy, Herald, Axi 406

The short answer is no, I haven't. I have no idea what one is - I'll have a search and find out more about them... OK, I am now wiser. I have never seen one of those before, they look incredibly versatile but I think I'll still persue the traditional lathe. Noise is a bit of a concern for me...

Lathe for chairmaking & more - Envoy, Herald, Axi 406

Thanks for that Duncan, I've just had a look at that lathe on AWGB and it looks almost ideal. At the risk of sounding very picky it seems that the only drawback for me is that It looks like the headstock doesn't rotate on that model (I may well be wrong) but rather it slides to the opposite end...

£1000 Bandsaws (Again!) Axi vs SIP vs Sabre 350

Wow! That really is a very, very similar though process to my own, although I think you dug deeper than I did :o :D You did well to find a 403, I searched and called around a few places but couldn't track one down. On balance, and after all that research It seems like the ideal choice based...

Lathe for chairmaking & more - Envoy, Herald, Axi 406

I've been looking for a new lathe and thought I'd settled on the Herald but the lack of mass and the short-ish bed started to concern me. The more I looked around the more I realised that my £1000 budget just wasn't going to buy me the lathe I desire (not new anyway). I began to look at the RP...

£1000 Bandsaws (Again!) Axi vs SIP vs Sabre 350

Well, I was on the verge of buying the Sabre when I spotted a Jet JWBS18 on Axminster’s ebay outlet. It was listed as 3 phase but looking closely it looked like it was single phase to me. I asked for clarification and was told it really was 3 phase. I looked at the pictures again and even asked...

£1000 Bandsaws (Again!) Axi vs SIP vs Sabre 350

A quick update: I bought the Startrite 351, it fitted easily in the car as the cabinet base is removed by simply undoing 4 bolts. I used it for a few weeks but I never really bonded with it. The lack of a cast table irked me but overall I just felt like the quality was very average and with...

FS: 3 qty 102" Axminster Bandsaw Blades

I have three spare bandsaw blades, all 102" long, all brand new and sealed in their packets. They are Axminster blades; 2 are BB102124 and the other is BB102584. Not sure exactly what the spec of the blades is but I'll try and measure them and count teeth etc if anyone is interested. £25 inc...

£1000 Bandsaws (Again!) Axi vs SIP vs Sabre 350

Yeah, I wasn't really sure if the 351s are worth that sort of money. I have seen 352s go for as much as a grand but to be honest I don't know yet what the difference is between the two machines. It does look to be in good order and if those blades are any good that'll be a nice bonus. I would...

£1000 Bandsaws (Again!) Axi vs SIP vs Sabre 350

Thanks for the reccomendation and the additional info Tom, I'll have a look into VFDs as I am also looking to buy a table saw, planer thicknesser, lathe, extractor and possibly a spindle moulder. Sounds like the SIP isn't way to go with the bandsaw. I don't really want to spend lots of time...

£1000 Bandsaws (Again!) Axi vs SIP vs Sabre 350

Some interesting and informative discussions, thank you to everyone who has chipped in so far. I was all set to buy the Sabre 350 today but held off. I thought I'd give it a bit of careful consideration over the long weekend. The Sabre still looks appealing but now I'm starting to wonder if I'll...

£1000 Bandsaws (Again!) Axi vs SIP vs Sabre 350

Good points Custard, thanks. My last bandsaw had an ali extrusion for the fence to mount to and while I never damaged it I can see how it could deform when mistreated  On the flip side of that, the fence lock on the Sabre seemed a bit primitive. I'm all in favour of not over...

£1000 Bandsaws (Again!) Axi vs SIP vs Sabre 350

Hi All, I have read a lot of threads about bandsaws over the last few weeks and seem to have developed that dreaded state of analysis paralysis! I am looking at the Axminster AT 2552B , the SIP 01444 , and the Record Sabre 350. On paper, and going with the old addage that heavier is better...

SOLD: Makita 5377MG Hypoid Circular Saw

Hi All, As this is the last of my 110V tools and I don't really give it much use I have decided to part (begrudgingly!) with my Makita 5377MG Hypoid Saw. This saw is amazing - forget everything you know about circular saws, this thing is a beast! I imported it from the USA about 3 years ago...

    FS: Plum and Holly Logs

Hi All, I have a couple of logs that were cut about 18 months ago. They have been stored in the shade and kept dry so they should be in decent condition and have some good usable wood (probably best suited to turning??). In the photo of both logs the holly is the slightly shorter one. They...
