    Reduction gear for headstock?

<Wipes off the douse of cold water> Phil: If was geared down 4:1? paulm: I'm working with acrylic. Specifically, a 40mm dia rod that I've part-drilled a 25mm hole through, using a flat bit. Of course it well overheated, but I thought that running a side-chisel down the hole, to tidy the last...

    Reduction gear for headstock?

Hi - I can't afford a variable frequency inverter for my 250W Record Power DML36SH-CAM woodworking lathe, but I would like to be able to run it slower. I thought just a planetary reduction gear, say 4:1, between the shaft and the chuck (3/4" 16tpi) would do it. Obvs it would have to be quite...

    Long tap

Thank-you. Whizzing off into realms of fantasy, I could try and mould it somehow, I suppose... Hmm now I've said it, it doesn't sound all that practical! Perhaps I'd better stop now. Thanks, people, as always, for all the info and advice. Graham

    Long tap

Yes, ok, not brass then! Steel, I suppose.

    Long tap

Thanks. Yes, I suppose the thread doesn't really need to be in the middle of the shaft, 4mm at one end would do. I was sort of revising it as the comments went along! (I nearly wrote "thread" instead of "comments" there, which might have been confusing : ) I've browsed for ready-made clock...

    Long tap

I was afraid of that! Thanks anyway :)

    Long tap

Probably brass. I want to replace the 2 or 2.5mm shaft of a dc motor with one that's threaded. What's "4D"? Anyway, I guess you're saying the thread's likely to be too long to mesh reliably? Now you nention it... :) Maybe a better idea would be to tap a 5 or 10mm thread, then drill out the...

    Long tap

Hi - can anyone suggest a source of a range of thin-but-long taps? I want to make a thread about 20 or 30mm long, M1.5 or M2 It sounds like it would be a bit of a strain on the thin tap. I can't tap in from each end, as the threads probably wouldn't match up! Unless there's a way to ensure...

    Friction polish & burnishing cream...

Ok, thank-you. My almost-gone burnishing cream, used after Rustins Plastic Coating, already leaves annoying bits of white in any indents, so I think I'll not be trying the toothpaste : ) , at least, not on wood. Perhaps on acrylic, but I already find Brasso good for that. I'll have a look for...

Where to buy Jo Sonja Iridescent set in Eu?

Is that what the shop quoted? Check prices UK -> Poland from various couriers: Hermes, DHL, FedEx etc etc etc. I can't think of many, but there's plenty. Then find a person to accept the delivery and send them via whatever courier.

    Friction polish & burnishing cream...

... seem to have gone up a lot lately for those of us with shallow pockets. Does anyone know of possible alternatives, eg if lac might be cheaper for the friction polish? Thank-you,

    Endgrain - cannot sand clean

    Ok, very true..

    Endgrain - cannot sand clean

Thanks again. The reason I cranked up the lathe speed is... I can put a sanding disc on the lathe, a round piece of wood with say about 200 grit paper double-sided sticky'd on. Sanding endgrain with it, either a flat piece or turning the piece to make a curve, always gives a perfect surface...

    Endgrain - cannot sand clean

    Excellent. Thank-you all.

    Endgrain - cannot sand clean

Hi - can anyone tell me the answer to these marks that won't sand away on the lathe? I've set the lathe to super-speed and used grits between and 600. The worst of it has slooooowly gone, but I can't get rid of it completely. I've found in the past that a LOT of hard work sanding by hand will...

    Flat bit

Thanks! I'm sceptical of the cable pulling, slightly less so of the 'part of the manu process'. If it was enlarged a little, it could be used to bolt a depth stop to the bit, if you needed one, but only up to the position of the hole, obvs. (Easier to make your own hole further back, as I've...

What is the little hole for in a flat drill bit?
