    Expensive gears

I'm thinking of slow-moving with potentially lots of strain, so could nylon cope? I did look (on ebay and in my memory!) at Meccano ones, but the teeth would be a bit small and the larger ones too thin.... It's for a robot knee joint, in case anyone's wondering. Mk's I to VI were with this...

    Expensive gears

I realise that precision hardened industrial steel gear wheels are going to be expensive, but I wonder why (apparently) there are no cheapo hobbyist-level ones available? I expected to find thousands from "£5 for 10" upwards when I looked for say 3mm thick 20-50mm dia mod 3 's, ideally with...

    Steel strips from plate?

    Good, thanks!!

    These "bar hinges"?

I've ordered 100 of these from AliExpress. Perfect! Thanks.

    These "bar hinges"?

Excellent! Good idea! The middle of the rod/bar wants to be about 20-something mm from the plate to get a 45° pivot, and they'd need to be strong, but it still sounds a good possibility. I'm looking!

    These "bar hinges"?

Ok, from the side: The bits on either side are aluminium plates about 1cm thick (and 30cm square) that I want to swivel in a manner similar to those toy snakes you used to see, up to 45° either way. I put some effort into fabricating them before thinking that perhaps they, or something that...

    These "bar hinges"?

Hi again, I'm wondering if a pair like the ½hinge in the pic exists? If my glorious artwork is intelligible, there are supposed to be 2 of them, so that a rod or bar goes through for a hinge effect.

    Steel strips from plate?

Yeah, was that Clark's? One of the jewels of the area, but obviously it's much more necessary that it be a coffee shop instead. (Until the owners can wangle a Change of Use and make a fortune turning it into flats, the new occupants of which will complain that there aren't any traditional...

    Steel strips from plate?

(I accidentally bought a job lot of !'s on Ebay, and have to use them up somehow!!!)

    Steel strips from plate?

Thanks! Though I've decided to go the model engineering route, I'm still interested in the impressive range of answers! Gilbow seems to make quite a few snips('s?). Was there one in particular you meant? I'd also be interested in how they do the dressing! G.

    Steel strips from plate?

Yes, sure, if you're lucky with a friendly local. 10 years ago the nearest to me charged £15 for less than a metre of I can't remember what, which was basically an offcut to them. I suppose the Goldilocks Principle applies - they have to be not so big that they won't interrupt a more profitable...

    Steel strips from plate?

Thanks for the thought, but 1.5 is much less bendy, and I don't get to Grays, my hometown, as much as I used to. Besides, on the way I'd have to go past Brundles Treasure House of Metal, and I don't trust myself! Cheers a lot though.

    Steel strips from plate?

Now we're talking! I didn't think of a model engineering supplier! Just the job, I think. Thanks!!

    Steel strips from plate?

Would that not be a bit difficult to pass down a line fairly accurately, even with a wood guide? (Also I'd be afraid of it jumping at me!) I thought you meant something about the size of a 5" or 6" plane, with the wheel coming out beneath, which would be ideal... I have a Ruyika "hand" circular...

    Steel strips from plate?

Because whatever I don't spend on this will be that much more to spend on other things, like fuel bills, minimal entertainment etc.

    Steel strips from plate?

Sure, yes! Any guillotine owners here near London E2? (Would the strip not come off curved?)

    Steel strips from plate?

Can you get small angle grinders? I'll have a look... I think eg a Dremel would be too slow, but otoh I guess it would only have to go ½-way through for the metal to be bend-and-break-able? Thanks,

    Steel strips from plate?

Hi - for a project, I need possibly a few dozen steel strips, say 1.5mm × 5or6mm x 200mm. I can't find anything on ebay, but there are plenty of sheets of that thickness. Does anyone have an idea for turning a sheet into strips? I've a feeling a bandsaw might cope with that thickness (at the...

    Accurater drilling

Ok, thanks. They both look good and useful in their own domains. For wood, a combination of the INCRA for marking and the optical punch for, er, punching, would definitely be good, though heading upwards pricewise. For small metal, it still seems to me that if the stripboard method, if the hole...
