    Coloured grain filler?

Hi - I've tried Rustin's natural of a test piece of walnut, then used Plastic Coating and it gives a beautiful glassy finish. Some might say it seems a bit artificial but I love it. The only problem is getting grain filler in walnut colour. Rustins only do natural, oak, teak & mahogany...

    Short-bed lathe?

Ok. I've used thickish drawing paper, and it came apart fine (when I wanted it to!) Thanks,

    Fitting New Grinding Wheels?

Why so fast? Would quarter-speed slow the sharpening that much? It would probably multiply the margin of safety by about ten times.

    Excuse the mess

Call me naive, but I thought welding a 19mm post on each end would be about a tenner, but it was £25, and would have been another £10 for extra little plates over those gaps. He did reinforce the bends with extra welding though. I might have been spoiling the ship for a hap'worth of tar, but...

    Fitting New Grinding Wheels?

I was terrified enough of using the new grinder (RP 6"), even before reading this thread! Is there any reason for them to go so fast apart from saving a bit of time? (I notice sparks still come off down to quite a low speed.)

    Excuse the mess

Anyway, as I was saying Thanks to all for suggestions. In the end I got a DML36SH (swivel-head) and cut the bars down by a foot. Also, I have the bowl banjo on the left end and the normal banjo on the bed, with a home-(actually the metalwork place up the road)-made 22" angle-iron toolrest...

Bench grinder selection & dressing tool use

Snorts at the £4.95 for "p&p" though. It's a scam really.

Bench grinder selection & dressing tool use

"That type of stone dresser is not really suitable for a 6 inch wheel, plus they wear out." Great! (Sigh) Shall I return it then? (DM don't seem to do any other kind.) Would you mind looking at these: http://www.axminster.co.uk/product.asp? ... e=1&jump=0 & telling me if, say, 410060 would...

Bench grinder selection & dressing tool use

Hi - I bought the 14.98 grinder from B&Q but the base was crooked. Took it back & the next one looked at was crooked too, so got refund. Bought 16.98 Titan from Screwfix. It vibrated off the bench, nearly, so that's going back too. Finally (I hope) I got the 6" Record Power one. Tried it in...

    Short-bed lathe?

Hi - dunnit I have. I got a DML36SH (swivel-head) and cut the bars down to 24". Also, I have the bowl banjo on the left-hand end and the normal banjo on the bed, with a home- (well actually the metalwork place up the road)-made 22" angle-iron toolrest joining the two, so I should be able to work...

    mirror finish

Ok, Rustins it is. (I'll just have to disturb that moth in my wallet, grumpy though it gets) Mailee - that link: G3 followed by G10? Wet wet-and-dry? I take it that means damp rather than sopping wet, and avoid water getting to the ends or underside? Not like on a car, where you can work with...

"Mix it thin" - is there a thinner you can get for it?

    mirror finish

Yes, Mailees' reply was good! Top helpfulness. My only experience with two-part is with casting resin, where you have to measure the hardener drop-by-drop & personally I waste as much as I use. But I'll stop being mean and give it a go!

    mirror finish

Hi again, and thanks a lot for the highly detailed reply - just the kind of thing I need at my current position on the learning curve! The penny has finally dropped that both AC and Rustins PC are two-part. From Axminster, at least, AC only comes 5lt at a time & needs spraying. Rustins PC is...

    mirror finish

"Nitrocellulose, Water or Acid cat?" It says on the can (it's an aerosol): "Contains MIXTURE OF BENZOTRIAZOL, POLYOXYTHYLENES". Does that make it any clearer?! It also says leave 15 mins between coats, but 2 weeks before using a rubbing compound. Is it the same with Rustins, Derek? And I...

    mirror finish

"I've been experimenting using clear car lacquer over AC paint on MDF and then burnishing it to a high gloss. It works superbly. Since I mastered this technique however, no-one has asked for a gloss finish" This is your lucky day, Dan! I don't know about MDF (and what is AC?) but I do want a...

    Short-bed lathe?

"I had a Record DML36 swivel head that I fitted short bed tubes to 18" long" Yes, I think that's the kind of thing I'm going to be looking for - I suppose they sell the heads separately? 3-phase is just going too far, but thanks anyway. Jeez, just to put a curved surface & a nice polish on a...

    Short-bed lathe?

Yes, points taken. I should really have ended all my sentences with "?"s, because I was mainly guessing. I'm coming to all this rather late. Thanks for pointing out the Axminster 900. I've had a look and it looks fine, just what I want - except again it's over 5ft long. Is everybody...

    Short-bed lathe?

Hi again, and thanks for the advice. I'll just have another whinge at the particular thing I'm looking for not being available then let it go... The specialised bowl-turning lathes generally seem to be made in a tank factory because of having to support perhaps half-cwts of wood for making deep...
