    Square dowels?

I googled walnut "square dowel" site:.co.uk for Images. The marquetry site looked v good... So they're called Square Lines, it seems. Funny eBay has nothing for that, only some old radios etc

    Square dowels?

Hello. What are they called? I'm looking for hardwood, various sizes from say 15mm downwards, by 1m? I've searched for eg "walnut square dowel 10mm" and not got far. If they have a special name, it would be helpful to know it! Thank-you,

    Drill bit size - inscriptions

I've just found that rubbing the end with a charcoal stick helps a bit, but only on light-coloured bits of course.

Dirty smears from fine grit sandpaper

Thanks. Yes, it must be the abrasive dust coming off. I've looked on EBay for Mirka paper, and the varieties include: Hiomant Mirox Avomax Plus Yellow Oxide Reusable Aluminium Oxide Professional Water Wet Latex Water Abrasive Paper Latex Help! It's for wood, prior to finishing/polishing...

    Drill bit size - inscriptions

"The drill shank gets hard towards the lands and cannot be stamped with the info." Thank-you! That makes sense and is also interesting. Thanks for all the other suggestions too. I suppose I'll have to do something like that... (I'll spare you the additional headache if you have a mixture of...

    Drill bit size - inscriptions

Yes, those calipers are good, but if you're looking through the bits for particular size, it's a pain. Any reason why the manufacturers can't fix it at their end?

    Drill bit size - inscriptions

Hi - Every time I'm squinting at the end of a drill bit, twisting it in the light to try to see what size it is, I think I must write on the UKW forum about this. And, at last, here I am! The faint inscription is only just readable when the bit is new. After it's been in and out of the chuck a...

Dirty smears from fine grit sandpaper

Hi - it was only for 3rd & fourth coats with very thinned paimt anyway, but forget the painting! :) The same happens when sanding bare wood (for any reason!). "Should I use light paper (aluminium oxide) for light wood, and dark paper (?) for dark wood?? Seems a hassle, and u know the smears...

Dirty smears from fine grit sandpaper

Hi - As the subject line says, sanding a light wood with fine eg 1000 grit paper, after 600, in preparation for painting with gloss (and yes it does seem to make a difference, for a super shine :) leaves smears on the wood the colour of the paper. Should I use light paper (aluminium oxide) for...

    What are they called?

Evening, chaps - Used in all sorts of adjustable, mainly metal, things - Little metal rods a couple or a few inches long that you poke through a hole, having a spring-loaded bit at the end you turn 90deg to stop it coming out again?

    Same for metalworking?

This Buying Advice/Tool Reviews forum is so good and useful. Can anyone link me to one exactly the same, but for metalwork (specifically, at the moment, lathes)? Thank-you,

    Ash

I hate to sound morbid, but is ash going to be plentiful and cheap now, for a while? Could someone say something to someone about not just burning it all?

    Stockists in Essex?

Hi - I'm edging towards getting another cheapish scroll saw (one that takes flat-ended blades this time), and I'd like to see before buying, esp the noise & vibration & ease of blade changing. I've spent the afternoon googling, but just in case anyone knows offhand - are there any places in...

    Wider long hole boring?

... and thanks bobham, too. I was just thinking of using the screw auger to enlarge the hole made with the Record Power set, which does have a shell auger. Then after that, as you say, a long twist drill or a spade as per Jacob would be better... I want to go through about 2ft - standard err...

    Wider long hole boring?

Thanks Jacob. A spade bit would keep to the initial 5/16" hole, more or less? They don't half get warm, going through hardwood, too, but I'm willing to give it a try... (I've just checked my 16mm spade - the spikey bit is about 5/16" max dia, luckily enough. Probably it'd be a good idea to...

    Wider long hole boring?

Hi - I need up to about 15mm diameter. Before I spend money, does anyone foresee any problems first boring to the standard(?) 5/16" then using a power drill from each end with a 300mm auger bit and hoping it stays central? (As the long hole kit from Record Power is about £30 and a cheap set of...

Ahem! Yes, of course I was waiting for someone to suggest that! (Cough) Oh well, a useful thing in the end.
