Pippy oak table - WIP, it may take a while!

Thanks Marcros, SWMBO likes that a lot! :D It was the general design she liked in the first link, not the rough joinery and timber, thankfully. When I initially asked how thick she wanted the top the answer was 3"! I think I will get away with less than half that now. If I got it rough sawn...

Pippy oak table - WIP, it may take a while!

Well, I bought a 14 foot oak log about 2 foot in diameter that is covered in burrs so should have some pippy qualities. The sawyer now needs to know how to cut it so I need SWMBO to decide what design she wants. So after looking around for a couple of days she comes up with this link. What she...

Split top Roubo bench on a budget

I shall try and accommodate :) Here's the handles and screws, an 8" hand wheel for the leg vice and a 5" for the tail vice. I shall order 2 x 4" for a moxon vice. Also there's 2 x 24mm ACME threads/nuts for the tail/leg vices. I shall take the bit off where the T bar goes through and drill...

Split top Roubo bench on a budget

Very good question! its not in the photos but on the other side of the log it is covered in burrs where small branches exited. The log will be pippy and have interesting grain but I will not (or knot!) know is how deep and how much until it is sawn, that's part of the gamble but you do pay less...

Split top Roubo bench on a budget

I moved the timber up to the workshop on Friday, here's it all stickered up. I asked the sawyer about quantities and he's OK with smaller orders as long as people can pick up, he's not doing mail order. He's a very nice helpful chap and will cut to your specification. He's called Karl at Geenix...

    Repairing a wobbly brace

I've finished the wobbly brace today, it is now nice and smooth and far less wobbly. First reamed out the boss to 1/2" The pushed in the oilite bush with an old fly press (needs some TLC, yet another job). I pushed the bush through so it was about 1.5mm proud at the end facing the brace...

Split top Roubo bench on a budget

I'm not sure if mine will be finished before yours, I'm also building a Toylander for the kids (I now hate MDF!!) and renovating an old tractor, and finishing the rebuild of a milling machine, and I just started to rebuild my radial arm saw.......... I may be a while! Cheers Andy

    Repairing a wobbly brace

Hi Robin, I've just answered the same question from Mark here's what I sent to him :) Its a wholesale place about 15 miles from Hull, it used to supply high quality timber to the boat trade but that art has largely died. He deals with DF, and larch and then mainly hard woods, the staple being...

Split top Roubo bench on a budget

Hi Mark Its a wholesale place about 15 miles from Hull, it used to supply high quality timber to the boat trade but that art has largely died. He deals with DF, and larch and then mainly hard woods, the staple being English oak. He doesn't resell cheap imported softwoods. I shall PM you the...

Split top Roubo bench on a budget

Hi Mark I hadn't had time to get it off the trailer yesterday, its my neighbours trailer and he has a job for it tomorrow so I shall be clearing a space for it in the barn and it will be on stickers by this evening :D I think the rule about junk expanding to fill available space may become...

Split top Roubo bench on a budget

Seeing as my current woodworking "bench" is an OSB packing case side on two Workmates I thought it was about time I knocked a proper one together. I nearly did it 2 or 3 years ago after doing some research into my ideal bench, making some drawings and putting together a cutting list...

    Repairing a wobbly brace

Thanks CC, Don't worry, it won't be going in the lathe :) Too awkward a shape, I shall be giving it a bit of a file as you suggest. The end of the shaft was just burred over before, I may cut a slot and use a circlip or something similar to what your suggesting. I won't be peening it over...

    Repairing a wobbly brace

Thanks Andy The chuck and ratchet work like a Swiss watch so its a pity the handle comes from the cheap end of the catalogue! Oilite bushes are typically made of a porous bronze alloy and impregnated with oil so they run silky smooth and are very hard wearing. They come in various standard...

    Repairing a wobbly brace

I've been lurking for a long time but I have been mainly metal bashing but now I have a few woodworking projects to work on so I thought I would jump out of the cabinet as it were and say hi :) I bought a brace on fleabay a while ago, nice condition for the princely sum of 10 quid inc P+P...
