Just bought a Viceroy TDS6 short bed

I was at the right place at the right time, a work colleague mentioned there was a lathe in the warehouse, so I went and took a look, enquired and found that they had consolidated two building maintenance workshops and only needed one lathe and as it had a gearbox issues it was being scrapped...

Cost to convert to 3 phase

The inverter I have is not a VFD, it simulates 3 phase pretty well and you can use the original switch gear. It's 10hp, and is quieter and cheaper than the equivalent rotary converter. With the soft start feature it minimises inrush and works off a 50 amp breaker. It only needs that kind of...

Just bought a Viceroy TDS6 short bed

Its a bit steep at 44 quid but you can get the 1-1/2" x 8 adapter for the patriot, thanks G_O for putting me on to that :) EDIT, you can select the chuck with any insert for the same prices, £176, interesting. I'll still wait until it is nestled in the workshop first

Cost to convert to 3 phase

If you went the inverter route and it didn't suit you then I guess there is a resale value so you could recoup some of the money. My quote was 22K because they would have had to change the transformer so I would get a quote first before deciding. G_O's query on standing charges and VAT is also...

Just bought a Viceroy TDS6 short bed

Thanks for the kind remarks about the lathe chaps. I was lucky with gearbox as I could replace the selectors using keyhole surgery with forceps through a hole in the headstock revealed by taking a layshaft out, so I didn't have to dismantle the lot - that would have been a challenge! Just so you...

Just bought a Viceroy TDS6 short bed

Some good ideas there. Soft jaws and a boxford chuck if all else fails, graduate spindle etc. Hopefully I'll just make the insert. If I do and make more than one I shall let the forum know in case others want one. Colchester are a good lathe, can be a bit noisy with straight gears. They are now...

Cost to convert to 3 phase

Doh! I guess it was pretty obvious from the first shot  I still use the odd VFD for machines where I want speed control and I'm too lazy to move a belt :)

Cost to convert to 3 phase

I was quoted 22K plus for a 3 phase supply so I bought a 10hp 240 to 415v PWM inverter whole workshop supply. It has soft start which helps with inrush current, and I put a 50A type C MCB in the distribution board to feed it. I only use one machine at a time, at the moment I just run cables...

Just bought a Viceroy TDS6 short bed

if all else fails I'll make my own insert, my neighbour regularly screwcuts in an aerospace factory so I'll get him around to help. I renovated this last year, it had a broken gearbox and several collapsed bearings after replacing some broken selectors in the gearbox, loads of new oils...

Just bought a Viceroy TDS6 short bed

Thanks guys I'll wait until I pick it up before I look into it further in case there is a box of bits including a nova or sorby chuck with it - doubtful but you never know. Looking at Nova, they don't have anything beyond 1-1/4" and even their blank insert doesn't go that big, I'm in no rush...

Just bought a Viceroy TDS6 short bed

Yes but I want to turn around corners :) I shall let you know how it goes, picking it up Monday morning. Many thanks for that, useful information, :D the threads were my main concern, I have an imperial screwcutting lathe, but not a lot of experience in screwcutting, but my next door...

    blade sharpening and glue

I bought it years ago second hand off the bay, it came with all the table extensions, extraction hoses etc. and seemed a god compromise between size/portability and precision. Somewhere between a site saw and a hunking great fixed machine. I need to set it up properly, I haven't really gone to...

    Large router table WIP

A tempting offer :) it would probably take me a couple of months to find all the bits! I've just had the block bored and crank ground and the injection pump repaired, it's mainly reassembly now and a bit of paint. I made a mess of some epoxy primer so will have to give that a blast in the...

thanks n0legs :) For once I am determined to get a project finished quickly. My Fordson Dexta renovation is now well over ten years. its still in bits and realistically a couple of years from completion.....

    blade sharpening and glue

Sounds like a good trip Bob. I've just replaced the blade on my RAS with an Atkinson Walker blade, its like night and day. I also bought a new blade for my beckum pk200 table saw from Wealdens. If it is as good quality as the Atkinson then I will be well pleased. I'll take the old ones and a...

Just bought a Viceroy TDS6 short bed

a bit of an impulse buy, it was at the right price and within easy collection distance. Doesn't seem to be a chuck however to begin with I just want it to make the odd round thing, knobs, short spindles, just general stuff, bowls may come later, probably if I ever get to retire. I was looking...

    Large router table WIP

I managed to get the larder door assembled yesterday, just stuck a couple of coats of Bona Mega on the door and put my routers in it. The door will go to the same colour as the rest in a day or so, it is still curing. Here's the drawer out, I built it out of 9mm ply except for the door to...

    Large router table WIP

:) I've already used it numerous times, partially to build the drawers but also on other minor projects, it's difficult to route when its covered in cling film though ;) It's a Triton TRA001, I got it because with the built in router lift it saved me quite a bit and so far I can't fault it...

Advice on removing stuck collet and bit

I bought an extra collet nut for a fiver so both my collets are clipped in permenantly as I kept forgetting when changing collets resulting in much bad language and gnashing of teeth.
