Just bought a Viceroy TDS6 short bed

Hopefully this will stop somebody from suffering the same issue. If it turns out that I have ruined it then given there isn't enough meat on the pulley to bore it put and use a taper bush, I will buy a twin pulley for about 25 quid and a taper bush to fit for about 10. As I'm running a VFD I...

Making some wood polish potions with the kids

I must have missed this one - doh! I'm a brewer and all the ingredients are measured down to a few grammes so I'm used to having full measurements. Some wax recipes swing from weights to volumes, then handfuls interchangeably but I'm going to weigh everything so once I get the right...

Making some wood polish potions with the kids

I have bought a couple of small simple bain-maries and I'm going to make various wax concoctions, some the kids will help me with. They are going through their Harry Potter fascination period so this way they can help me make something useful Yes I am aware that some of the products have...

Well, I nearly made a mess of that. Don't ream the hole out like I did! A straight cutting edge tool like adjustable reamers are no good when you have a key way. The cutting edge falls into the keyway making the tool deflect so you end up with an off centre hole. Best to use a boring bar on a...

Frame marked up for welding and held in place with some mag switches Now painted with two coats of black smoothrite. Once this has set I will bolt the existing cast lathe base to the new base. So onto the pulley. Drill out to 18mm then gradually ream out to 19mm with an adjustable reamer...

Just bought a Viceroy TDS6 short bed

While I'm sorting out the motor, I thought I would raise the lathe a bit. The centre was about 70mm below my elbow and it seems the preferred height is at the elbow or just above. Given I had some 50mm box section knocking about, the idea is to raise it 100mm so the centre will be about 30mm...

    Plastic on the way out

What galls me is the "they only say that because they are making money". Well oil and gas companies and their lobbyists must obviously be saints and do their job just for fun. And as we are considering cost, what about the people of Syria, Iraq and all the previous countries that have gone...

    Plastic on the way out

Either way people make lots of money, be it oil, gas or alternative energy sources. Both sides reckon they have the best science. Irrespective of my opinion, I for one is not willing to leave my daughters future to chance, at least the small part I can play. As I see it, we get cleaner air...

    Plastic on the way out

We try our hardest to be green and carbon neutral and minimise plastic use. The wife is into permaculture (sustainable agriculture without the use of pesticides etc.) and we recently planted about 500 trees and bushes. Most of the bushes we mulched with left over sheep fleece from a friends...

Advice please Taper shaft chuck falling out of drill press

If it's burred inside then one of these https://www.rdgtools.co.uk/cgi-bin/sh00 ... ml#SID=467 If you do get the reamer, only use it lightly to remove the burrs, I wouldn't cut a whole new taper without a way of keeping it straight, you may end up with a lot of run out. If it is just dirt and...

Just bought a Viceroy TDS6 short bed

I hoisted the lathe off the base and took the VFD and motor to the bench. The motor tests fine, no shorts between phases or to earth and all phases have the same resistance. Tried the VFD on another motor. error E41 came up on the VFD - return to supplier, output probably duff. The VFD is...

American style pipe clamps/ sash clamps.

I bought mine from here http://www.pipefittingsdirect.co.uk/con ... k/d15.html £18:50 +VAT for a 3.25m length then about 8 quid delivery. I bought 4 lengths as I seem to remember the carriage being the same for 4. Cheers Andy

Just bought a Viceroy TDS6 short bed

Thanks Minilathe Unfortunately I had problems getting a modern motor with any grunt to fit in the small cabinet, hence the older motor as the form factor is smaller. A modern 1hp motor will not fit. Given its the older motor shape, it isn't actually that old, but I think it may have had a hard...

Just bought a Viceroy TDS6 short bed

Today was bitter sweet. It started well, I cracked on and installed the Sorby grinding jig. The jig was to go on the movable bar that I already installed on my sharpening station a couple of years ago for just such and installation. However it needed a plate fitting to allow all four fixing...

Just bought a Viceroy TDS6 short bed

It's been a while since I updated this thread as I jumped into the thread about changing Viceroy bearings for a while. Now that has been done and I have been on a 2 day training course at Turners Retreat I can now finish this off. I am putting adding the digital display and the installation of...

    First turning work

Thanks Chris :) Yes, it is very satisfying, I just need to keep the momentum up and make shavings rather than messing about with the tools :) I shall try and do some turning today, if its only 30 minutes.

    First turning work

Just completed a two day course with Mick Hanbury at Turner's Retreat near Doncaster. Very enjoyable, great facilities and Mick is a very enthusiastic, knowledgeable and skilful tutor. Here's the products, definitely lots of room for improvement, but they are practise pieces but I'm pleased...

Has anyone tried replacing viceroy bearings?

One tip, change the bearings before painting it! I had a few paint chips that I covered with a small brush and a smattering of choice swear words :)

Has anyone tried replacing viceroy bearings?

I can confirm A52 and an A41 belts did the trick. I now have the lathe back up and running with new bearings in motor, intermediate pulley and headstock. I guess I best start doing some turning now :) Back to the main renovation thread for the last few bits of work.

Table and fence for Meddings radial arm drill

It's light blue Rust-Oleum CombiColor Hammertone aerosol, I used it mainly because you can use it down to 5c which helps in winter and it was the closest I could get to the original with a standard paint. I usually spray with a gun and compressor but as it was all relatively small components and...
