Split top Roubo bench on a budget

Cheers :) I would love a Wadkin PK or a PP, but the BGP sounds interesting. Might take up too much floor space though.

Split top Roubo bench on a budget

Aye Andy, the top should be able to take a couple of swipes with a plane before it becomes translucent :) I got all the remaining stretchers and the legs cut to size and cut all the tenons today. Next job the mortices, then adjust the tenons to fit on the router table. Cheers Andy

Split top Roubo bench on a budget

I'm trying to do something similar however I'm just marking up the back stretcher tenons, one end is nigh on square, the other is distinctly trapezoidal. I'm not going to take it out but work with it, I'm pretty sure this is normal wood movement and if I had assembled it straight away rather...

Split top Roubo bench on a budget

Thanks Chris, I am making it a bit of an epic. I must admit I have never questioned the placement of the vice. I still have time to change, maybe I shall put it in the middle :) I am having problems with the squareness of stock. Possibly due to not using the planer on the legs and stretchers...

Split top Roubo bench on a budget

I spoke too soon about the warm workshop, the boiler broke down yesterday, we are still in the middle of installing it and it's been going for about 3 weeks. I'll take a look on Monday, too busy on the bench at the moment so a couple of fan heaters and an extra t-shirt and some gloves are called...

Split top Roubo bench on a budget

I've had another spell away from the workshop, house DIY, work around the farm, my day job and looking after kids mainly. I've got the extension on the house finished, just needs fitting out. So it's utility and kitchen cabinets next, but I have a special dispensation to build the work bench...

Impulse Elm board purchase, possible coffee table?

I was working down in Basildon yesterday and was passing Brentwood on the way home so it would have been very rude not to have popped in to the Hardwood offcut shop. I didn't have much time, I was mainly there to check it out for future reference, but I did come away with a Canadian Cherry...

Impulse Elm board purchase, possible coffee table?

Yes, upstairs they have longer boards and we needed about 2.3m for the shelf. Which became shelves so I ended up buying about 8 boards I believe

Impulse Elm board purchase, possible coffee table?

Good idea, I like that. :) I've asked missus to think about a use for it before declaring the coffee table idea. If she comes to the same conclusion then I'm on a winner.

Impulse Elm board purchase, possible coffee table?

I was over at British Hardwoods this morning picking up some oak flooring for the daughters bedroom and I promised we would look in their wood shop for an interesting piece of timber for the bit in her bedroom where we had to box in some terrible old stonework. We found a nice piece of...

    Digital Tachometer on old lathe

I would agree with that, definitely not essential, a nice to have at best. For about 20 quid all in it doesn't cost much and I'm a bit of a geek so I did it. Here's the post explaining what I did in case do you fancy installing one. post1228741.html#p1228741

    Digital Tachometer on old lathe

Costs about 12 quid plus an enclosure and DC power supply, an old wall wart or laptop PSU will do. It's a doddle to do, usually. The only advantage is you can tell the speed of the spindle. Mainly used if you have VFD, not much use for fixed belt speed changes.

    Green Oak Porch

Lovely job there, you must be well proud. A neighbour dropped around at the weekend, he has a green oak construction business. He spotted the Wadkin bandsaw I've been working on and got his tape measure out. He said "cool, it will take 200mm easily". I somehow feel I will be seeing him again...

    Old brace use?

Thanks guys, I shall swap jaws for now. I need to get out to the car boot sales and pick up some more braces. Yes I was sweating like a pig, this hot weather is weird, up in the Pennines in one of the wettest parts of the UK and my neighbours have run out of water. We have a bore hole so OK for...

Advice regarding Meddings M10 Bench Drill please

Meddings usually supply manuals on request, give them a call. In terms of a vice, something like this from Chronos maybe? To fix it to the 9" round bed, maybe drill the base of the vice horizontally and use a few of these or similar? They are Rockler fence clamps but others such as UJK from...

    Old brace use?

Thanks Geoff, very interesting, I like old tool catalogues. I have a longer throw Chapman I can put in the kids box that does take normal square bits, it's a bit rough but works fine, I used it to fit the hinges on a field gate a couple of weeks ago. I had a healthy glow after that but more...

Just bought a Viceroy TDS6 short bed

Thanks! I wish it was that easy  A lot is trial and error, I do make a lot of ****-ups :)

    Old brace use?

I had a workshop full of kids this morning, the eldest daughter had a friend sleeping over and the youngest daughter joined in so three girls around 9 to 11 YO. I have been saving a box of smaller tools for kids to use so out they came including a small brace that I renovated long ago, subject...

Just bought a Viceroy TDS6 short bed

I meant move my bottom shelf, but on second thoughts I'm going to move both my shelves and make something similar to yours :) I've sized it up for the cutting list but it may be a while, there's a fair queue in front of it :) Cheers Andy

I like that a lot. I may move the bottom shelf and do something similar.
