Had a visit from Festool today

Well, don't keep us in suspense, what did he show you! =P~ .

Apparently, an extremely well wrapped package has arrived.... It's going to be a while before I can use it but thanks Dibs for all of your effort.

Before anyone else chips in, I don't think it is unsafe to have friction fit rings, just look at any spindle moulder. They normally have multiple interference fit rings, one inside the other. As long as there is no upward force on the ring it is not going to come out. The fence will nearly...

Ahh, laser cutting, that makes sense - obviously wasn't paying attention when that was decided! If the CNC shop is the last stage in the job then they have the only critical stage in the process so you should be able to get a very smooth interference fit with the rings. Definitely recommend...

That doesn't really make much sense. Are they telling you that the plate thickness tolerance is as quoted or that their ability to machine a given dimension is dictated by the material thickness? Anyway, we may be trying too hard to be too clever. For such a small project (for the machine...

That should all depend on the tolerance quoted and the quality of the machining. Specifying a different sized ring is not necessary. The firm you are dealing with should be able to help you here but the stepped hole needs to be specified with a + 0.Xmm, - 0.0mm tolerance and the ring is the...

Standard cast Lucite Perspex - from the manufacturer's data sheet.

    Router table insert

The elastic modulus of perspex is ±2500 MPa, that of 1050 Al is ±70000 MPa. Good luck "strengthening" your plate with perspex, might have to be a "little bit" thicker than the aluminium.... !

Definitely like the idea of laser engraved markings. It would be a great addition if a super accurate centre line and maybe 20mm step markings (to help line up the fence) could be added. The change in plate size is essential, I hadn't even noticed that it wasn't standard size. I don't want to...

    Georgian glazing bars?

Thanks for the titles. I love reading old manuals like these. I think everyone will have heard of or have a copy of George Ellis' books but I particularly like Peter Nicholson's New Practical Builder from 1825 and J W Riley's Manual of Carpentry and Joinery from 1905. Excellent old school texts...

Yup, checked mine. Everything is correct - no extra drilling or tapping required either. Thanks.

Thanks for adding me to the list, Dibs! Just to be sure, I wanted Aluminium rings and discs and that's not clear from the spreadsheet. Ta very much!

I should probably speak up here as I mentioned a 52mm ring. I've measured some of my medium sized cutters and the vast majority are 41 - 46 mm. I use a few though (Wealden's tenon cutter, sash cutter and kitchen door set) that are 49mm, so I thought increasing the second ring by 2 mm would be...

    axminster router lift

I've emailed Axminster several times (about this and other things) and I never get a response out of them. I telephoned their technical line though, and a very nice man answered all of my questions straight away without me being kept hanging around while he asked someone else. I don't know...

Paint Finsh for Iroko & South facing timbers

If you are really worried about the sea air, and as an alternative to aluminium primer, you could always coat everything in West System epoxy. It's an expensive and messy way of priming but it will make the wood completely waterproof and the paint finish will last longer.

Paint Finsh for Iroko & South facing timbers

It's going to be very difficult to find any finish that wont eventually split in exposed coastal conditions. You need to thoroughly degrease the iroko with cellulose thinners and allow to dry before applying your chosen finish. I'm a fan of Sikkens Rubbol AZ and Onol primers. They give a...

    Low friction plastic

Don't forget, Axminster are really only selling thin off-cut strips and not full meter or half meter sheets. They do seem a bit steep when compared, though.

    When to sharpen

Aimed at you? Er, no. I was pretty sure that only one of Jacob's 'friends' would have responded to my original post. (Is this question even for me?) Jake? Gracious? Doesn't anyone understand irony anymore.
