Getting Perfect Edges with a Jointer

It sounds like your knives are set a fraction too low in relation to the outfeed table if you are getting a concave joint. Brian

Brown Rot, White Rot and other Wood Pestilence.

Bob I have to post a few corrections; Brown rot fungi typically decay the cellulose component of wood leaving the lignin intact. The white rot fungi, however, attack all components of the wood and it is the removal of lignin that causes the bleaching that led to the term 'white' in white rot...

    Going to Canada!

I go to Vancouver regularly and generally use Zoom and although they are cheap they offer a very good service. It also pays to check out Air Canada as they occasionally have a good deal but rarely advertise the fact? You don't mention what level of comfort you will be requiring for your touring...

    Poplar or Tulipwood

It's very simple Poplar in the UK equates to what our N American cousins call aspen or cottonwood. What they call poplar is also known as yellow poplar or tulipwood but it isn't a poplar in the botanical sense that polar is and which we know by the name of canarywood or canary whitewood which...

    Worm and a wicker basket

Roger It could be powderpost beetle, but Bostrychid rather than the more common Lyctid, which can make large flight holes. Their frass is flour-like in consistency if this helps with ID? Brian

    Cedar shingles

Cedar shingles are actually Western red cedar (Thuja plicata), not a true cedar (Cedrus spp), and preferred for their resistance to decay (durability~25+ years), hence the cost. For a bird table roof though I would use just about anything? Brian

Glueing 2 boards back to back

You have inadvertently created an unbalanced board in gluing two different materials together. When the humidity changes the MDF face will shrink/expand whilst the worktop side will remain relatively unchanged due to the laminate. Hence, the combined board has cupped - if you placed the glue-up...

Tool shops - Canada - Calgary ... Vancouver

Never managed to get to it when I lived there but there is a Lee Valley in Vancouver - 1180 S.E. Marine Drive (by Knight St. Bridge). If it's anything like photographic equipment though you may find it's cheaper here!! You will love Vancouver though - enjoy your trip. Brian

    bandsaw advise please

Steve I'm sure you will be happy with the BS250. One recommendation though for cutting thin strips would be to knock up an additional fence that is deeper than your timber. The supplied fence is good but not very high. Brian

    bandsaw advise please

Hi Steve I recently bought the Record Power BS300 (£380) and I have cut 150mm ash, beech and sycamore thinner than you want without any problems. I haven't tried iroko (as I don't have any) and if 75mm is the maximum size you want to cut then maybe the BS250 would suit you which is cheaper...

    Nomenclature for hole direction?

It sounds like you have it. It can be confusing but if you keep in mind the idea of a cylinder (and the terminology) it makes sense....after a while! To clarify your last point; a radial or tangential section is technically also a longitudinal section and is commonly referred to as...

    Nomenclature for hole direction?

There is nomenclature (based on a tree being cylindrical) that is used in wood anatomy and comprises three principal axes: longitudinal, radial and tangential. To put this into context, quarter sawn boards show a radial face or section, flat sawn boards show the tangential face (or section) and...
