    Mystery tool

Does one revolution move the pointer one division and what is the diameter of the wheel?

    Steam bending strap alternative options?

I saw something similar to this a few years ago. Easiest way to explain it; imagine the kinks in a bendy straw, but in the wood fibres.

    Magazine/beer rack

I can see where all the beers go but you haven't left much room for the magazines on that top shelf :)

    Camera not working on laptop

You mean the webcam? How much would the repair cost? I'd look at getting a USB plug-in?

    BBC The Repair Shop polish

It could be a Liquid Wax or one of the many Furniture Reviver products (most likely a liquid wax with a marketing twist!).

    Maple alternative for steam bending?

Ash - would have to select though as it can vary from very light to quite dark (subjective, I know!). Steam bending is not something I've ever had to do but, given that you're effectively re-wetting the wood, you are going to have to factor in the drying time. That could be weeks to months -...

Advise on Router for Router Table

My favourite router for use in a table is the Dewalt 625E Very easy to remove the springs and it also has a height adjuster, although from below the table, unlike that shown with the Triton.

    Bench top jointer

You mean rabbet - not the fluffy things you make glue from :). Either way, same thing.

    Quiz time

Well I could make a woody, plasticy, spinny thing out of those. Do I win? :)

    Bench top jointer

At the risk of incurring the wrath of Mike :), the term 'jointer' is appropriate if the infeed table has that extension. It was used to cut the wood for joints - rebates. Nowadays most people don't know why it is there - I only discovered this a few years ago! Without it, it should be called a...

    Smoothing curves

Could be a combination of all three? You don't say what the material is. If it's mdf you might be better sanding but if it's got a grain you'll have to see how that reacts to, eg scraping. If it causes too much tearout (try scraping from opposite directions) go back to sanding. I would...

    Plumbing help

I would lower the float a lot. These types of valve tend to reach maximum fill and shut off suddenly, as opposed to the older ball valve types which gradually close off the feed. If that doesn't work dismantle and check for dirt?

Chipped edges on new planes and do new planes need sharpening before use?

I think it's a reasoned strategy on behalf of the manufacturers - if the blade WAS sharp out-of-the-box, for most woodworkers it wouldn't be sharp enough - so why bother!!

Found this strange Day-glo pink crusty thing in my grass, any ideas?

Pink patch lawn disease according to the lawn man!

    Carpenters tool box?

Maybe not exactly what you're after but for site work I use this. Made from offcuts, base wider than top for stability, knee-height - useful for knealing on the wood you are cutting, tool-storage and a good step-up - make sturdy enough to support your weight! You could always upgrade it and put...

Alluminium bi fold doors any recomendation for supply and fit

Depends on your budget, Origin have a good reputation but are expensive (apparently - never used them).

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Here's one from a few years ago. This is what you can do with some slightly bigger boxes - largest one for the TV. Look away if you're mdf-averse though :) The face is all lipped with tulipwood. Alcove was about fifteen feet high.

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Thank you marcros, that's a very generous thing to say. I will correct one thing though - none of that is inlay! I start from the middle and work out so it's outlay, if anything! The design was just a 'let's see what this looks like...' and I'm quite pleased with it. I am working on more boxes...

How to change career to woodworking

My question was semi-rhetorical and meant to get you thinking about your motivations. It sounds like you are apprehensive about making a change and discovering it wasn't as stimulating as you thought it would be? Not being critical but only you can take that leap of faith? My last paid...
