    Timber Tannin Content

Thanks for your suggestions. I have found that lime is the answer. I got hold of a bit today; it hardly changes colour at all, the grain is right, and it looks gorgeous with the dark oak. Also tried sycamore; it doesn't go very dark, but it does go quite a nasty yellow colour... Cheers, Marcus

    Timber Tannin Content

Will need to plane/scrape/sand the inlay smooth after it is glued in, which would remove colour from surrounding oak... Cherry's no good unfortunately, it darkens almost as much as oak, surprisingly. Sycamore I don't know, will try it out. I've never liked beech that much.... Was also...

    Timber Tannin Content

I have some inlay work coming up and need some advice re. timber choice. I will be inlaying light coloured timber into oak, then using a chemical treatment to darken the oak — something that reacts with the tannin, either lye or washing soda or ammonia. So for the inlay I need a light coloured...

Is it ok to use white spirit to remove sanding dust (oak)?

I have some water based paint that says that it's OK to use white spirit based wood preserver before the paint - so long as it is left for at least three days after application, after which time the white spirit will have totally evaporated.... Apparently if you put the paint on straight after...

a stanley no 4 smoothing plane as my first plane

New industrial Stanley - don't go there! I would also advise getting an older second hand one. Like Gary I prefer the Records. See if you can have a play with both, though either will do you fine if the sole is flat....

Is it ok to use white spirit to remove sanding dust (oak)?

+1 My understanding (correct me someone?) is that white spirit should completely evaporate off if you leave it for a few days. Meths is very very unlikely to discolour timber unless it's very very pale, and even then unlikely. Will be fine on oak. But either is probably unnecessary. As Pete...

Surprised at NFU, usually they're super helpful. Is the issue that it will not be a business?

    SIP 01944 BMorticer

It's a product fault, but you do get what you pay for.... I would send it back, and look out for a decent second hand mortiser on ebay....

Things that give you an irrational amount of rage

I find this whole car/bike thing a bit strange from either side of the fence. I drive a van, I ride a bike, the vast majority of the time with no problems at all from anyone. Occasionally when I'm driving I find an annoying cyclist. Now and again when cycling I'm faced with a thoughtless or...

What WONT stick to wood glue?

Parcel tape. You can stick it to your pads which saves manoeuvring it in separately.

    Scrub plane question

Just to go back to the honing thing, I've made a short vid of my honing method for curved plane irons, which is quite different to the one in the Lie-Nielsen video. Hope it's useful to someone. Sorry for poor vid quality, did it on my phone... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1SCW8VYemY
