    Veneer press platten question

It's going to be hand screws (21) which will be braced across the underside of the torsion box by square section steel tubing. Had a bit more of a think over night about the torsion box itself. Current plan is core made from 18m mdf, probably 4" deep, and 1/2" birch ply for the faces...

    Veneer press platten question

Thanks for this. A good idea, though I'm a bit worried that the construction adhesive needs a certain amount of 'bulk' to work properly, and wonder if this would interfere with the flatness.... Not sure. I think I may go with 18mm MR mdf, and put formica on both sides of the torsion box, which...

Where is your fine line between furniture and art?

I think that the two were once much closer than they are now, and a bit of a false dichotomy has grown up over in the last few centuries. In medieval times the artist (as in the chap who painted pictures) was viewed as just another craftsman playing a part in making buildings; on the whole art...

Releasing wood tension by heat / Wood bending?

Think you're probably right re stem and apron. Hadn't given it that much thought as it isn't a technique I'm ever likely to use! I'll ask him about it if I see him - I pop in from ocassinally when I'm in Suffolk.

Releasing wood tension by heat / Wood bending?

I was told of this technique by Nat West who owns and is head of training at the International Boatbuilding Training College. I'm quite willing to be wrong, if I am, but he knows his stuff! It was a long time ago that we had the conversation, but I got the impression that it was not something...

Releasing wood tension by heat / Wood bending?

Any culture that built really big wooden ships, including our own — not for the planking though, but for more substantial timbers - frames, stem and apron etc. Remember that in a ship these could be huge. After the piece was bent into place the charred timber would be adzed off.

Releasing wood tension by heat / Wood bending?

I love watching Japanese woodworkers except that it always makes me feel totally incompetent! When building wooden ships with really substantial timbers they would actually light one half of the timber and let it burn for a while to heat it up before bending...

    Veneer press platten question

I'm making the platten for my new veneer press. It is essentially going to be a large torsion box. I'm wondering what to make it out of... I am basing the torsion box on Ian Kirby's design. he suggests using MDF for the core and 12mm HDF for the skin. Only trouble is I don't think you can...

    Glued joints strength test

never seen this guy before - fantastic! The clip where he makes a wooden air aid siren is brilliant. You could sit me in a workshop with a stack of wood for forty years and it would never have occurred to me to do that :-)

    Solid Oak Worktop Problem

Without seeing a pic it's hard to say, but likely to be iron stains, quite possibly from iron in your water supply. It will tend to stay a bit damp round the edge of the sink and doesn't take much. Oak goes black at the drop of a hat. If this is what it is then oxalic acid (applied to entire...

    Old Hide Glue............

You can usually disassemble hide glues furniture by applying meths to the joints. A syringe is good for directing it into the gaps. The meths is very thin so will flow in almost anywhere. I believe it works (counter-intuitively) by removing moisture from the glue as the meths evaporates off...

    DeWalt 1205 Safety Queries/Upgrade

If you are going to rip on it then you MUST make sure that everything is completely rigid — no play in the arm, roller head not loose in the track, bearings OK etc. If there is movement anywhere it's just asking for the blade to catch.

What kind of furniture do you hate???

I hate furniture that is designed to ram the status and power of the owner down everyone else's throat. For example Louis XIV sort of stuff, Boulle etc. Much as I admire the craftsmanship I hate the furniture. Also certain types of contemporary designer furniture that have the same...

    Making a sensory dark den

Does it need to be quiet as well as dark? If so thick mdf will stop more sound than plywood.... Not sure how significant the difference is, but there is one, so maybe worth thinking about.
