Anyone wanna join the 100 club ?

Slightly off topic: I met someone who told me the story of how he found a nice second hand steel rule which he bought and took to work. After a few weeks he was going quietly nuts because he kept getting little errors he couldn't account for in everything he did. In the end he noticed the...

Thanks for that Mick, glad you like it! I also am glad to have such a great pool of skill and expertise to draw on on the forum, it's a great resource....

WIP — Traditional Screw Veneer Press

I'm going to heat the large plates with a paraffin heater as recommended by Patrick Edwards http://wpatrickedwards.blogspot.co.uk, who seems to know what he's doing! He puts the plates on saw horses puts the heater under them and boxes it in with scraps. Haven't tried it yet though so it's a...

Coffee Table with a pewter crossword

That rusticky antique finish is not hard to do — hand plane/scrape/sand, raise grain, sand again up to p240, then put on a water based stain or dye that darkens the grain (van **** is usually fine, perhaps with a bit of something else in to warm it up a little), then a low build finish on top...

Amazing! I wonder how much the search term "oak furniture" costs per click.

    engraving letters onto wood

It may be worth getting a quote; I had to use a (metal) hand engraver for part of a job recently and was surprised at how reasonable the price was; and it would look the business while supporting traditional crafts etc. CNC would serve perfectly well though.

Cat House Build - need input

That's exactly how I'd do it too, you barely need an exploded diagram, just cut the bits out and stick 'em together! Not quite sure how the base works though.... Lucky kitty!

WIP — Traditional Screw Veneer Press

Thanks chaps, Should have thought of that — perhaps that should be on the reverse side, so I just flip it over during tea breaks.... My top tip — don't do what I did, use a nail gun for the the core!

Coffee Table with a pewter crossword

Here's a little project I've just finished for a client. It's a coffee table in Arts and Crafts style with a pewter crossword inlaid into the top (it was commissioned as a gift for someone who loves crosswords). They had a list of arts and crafts motifs that they wanted me to work into the...

WIP — Traditional Screw Veneer Press

Sorry it's been a while, I got distracted by other jobs and had to solve a few teething problems but have now finished it! I realised that I had made an error of judgment with my original plan to have the trestles secured using the same steel rods that hold the beams (see previous post). It...

    engraving letters onto wood

3 Option, hand, cnc or laser. Here's a hand carver: http://rupert-king.co.uk CNC or laser engraving (easier to find and cheaper, but not quite so nice), ie: Google will reveal many more.

What do you think of this table?

I wasn't really making a point about style. I wouldn't buy most of the examples I showed either, though I quite like two of them. My point was that the examples I showed were of a reasonably high quality when judged by the criteria that furniture has been judged by for centuries. In other...

What do you think of this table?

I think if you can afford to wait for a bit you can do much better than that on ebay (or physical auction). My partner and I got a gorgeous 50's dining table 8' long with 8 really good chairs, proper craftsmanship, proper timber for £360 on ebay a while ago. We had to wait a bit, but if you do...
