    Iron hardware on oak

Thanks all, I think I will run the options past the client and let them make the decision!

    Iron hardware on oak

I need to hand an exterior oak T&G door with T - hinges. The door is to be left unfinished, I'm wondering if I use traditional iron hardware there will be problems with iron staining when it rains. The door is reasonably sheltered, but will get the weather sometimes I expect. Any thoughts?

    MAC Timbers

Who knows? It could be something quite different. Maybe someone is trying to sell their house and buyers are being put off by a business operating next door without permission. I have a friend who experienced something similar — it was a nightmare, cost them two years of stress, and thousands...

    Radial Arm

+1, so long as it is a good quality radial arm saw. RASs can have much bigger capacity, quieter, more versatility. I wouldn't touch one that didn't have a cast iron arm. A good RAS is a brilliant tool, super accurate when set up properly: a bad or worn out one is a nightmare, you'll spend...

    Outdoor protection

If you use a decent glue it will seal the wood and should help stop water ingress into the joint, which is where rot is most likely to start. And by all means give it a coat of varnish over the joints once it is together.

    Outdoor protection

Ah, never mind, but I would definitely glue the joints....

    Outdoor protection

I would glue the joints with a decent gap filling exterior adhesive like cascamite. What sort of timber is it? If it is a non-durable softwood you should treat it with preservative and then paint/varnish. If a durable softwood or a durable hardwood just varnish without preservative. If a...

    Chisel Handels

Hi Wo, how much are you wanting? I can easily get hold of some if you are willing to wait a bit (am quite busy at the moment so it would need to wait until I am at the timber yard in question). For those in the UK, ML West near Midhurst (West Sussex) have always had quite a good supply of Box...

Got my art nouveau library ready

+1. I think it's well overdue that pattern and decoration make a come back — the whole clean lines, minimalist thing is getting a bit tired and predictable now...

Question: Do you prefer the old tools (pre electric) or new?

I also have an excellent well-sharpened ripsaw, but I still hate ripping, and find it anything but pleasurable. I enjoy it about as much as I enjoy cross-country running, ie only slightly less than being hit repeatedly with a stick. At least in hardwood at anything over 3/4". My bandsaw is the...

    Matt finish for wenge?

If your priority is to keep the colour as light as possible you could try an acrylic lacquer and knock back any shine with wire wool and wax once it has gone off. Goes without saying try it on an off-cut first!

    Diamond Stone

RE the water/oil question I now use a squirt of WD40 on my DMTs which works very nicely.

    Restoring old furniture

+1 to Andy's suggestion. Just a clean and some wax would probably be fine judging from the picture. As others have said, refinishing is usually a last resort. If it really needs that then be prepared for quite a long process (in commercial terms it is often a lot more expense than the piece...

    Spindle moulders

Second hand combined saw-spindles are (in my experience of trying to find one for myself) like hen's teeth. I looked for about two years and gave up. New ones aren't that common either. Rojek used to do a compact one, but that wasn't on sale in the UK last time I looked. Beyond that you is...

Anyone need a dewalt RAS dado flange?

Easy, get in touch with Bob, above, and ask it he'll make you one. He did a great job on mine and it didn't cost that much....

    First post!

+1 to what Mike said re JK's machines and use of timber. What's perhaps somewhat unusual in JK's approach to timber selection was that rather than coming up with a design and then finding the best timber to work with that design (which is by far the most common approach) he would find a...
