Help with this Lie Nielsen No7

I don't know about planes, but I do know eBay and his pictures and description do not show the damage at all. I would do as Modernist says and ask for some compo from him in the first instance - give him a chance to correct his mistake.

sharpening set up required. need advise

A six-inch dry grinder with a white and pink wheel and some form of grinding jig unless you're superb at freehand grinding. I've heard two experts say that freehand grinding is fine for certain tools, but that on some it is virtually impossible to get a consistent edge. The Oneway jig is well...

    A day with Tracy Owen

    Cheers Mike. Yes, the little tips were very helpful and my confidence has definitely improved. I will put some pictures up of things I turn, but I don't think I'll join the competition yet. Here's what I made with Tracy the other day;

    Bandsaw for woodcarving blanks

Hiya mate and welcome to the forum. I've no idea of the Fox, but I know that Startrite, Kity and Elctra Beckum are all decent makes :)

    A day with Tracy Owen

I spent Tuesday at Tracy's house having a day's tuition and it was the best £120 I've ever spent. Aside from being a very nice bloke, Tracy is an excellent tutor who insisted that I do all the work (rather than watching him). I learned a huge amount and it sorted out a few niggles which I have...

Lubricate rope to fit it through a tight hole?

Trigaar, that's what I was thinking of, yes. That way you can re-tighten in the future if you need to. I buy mine online, but make sure it is actual Paracord and not just green string, cos I've seen cheap imitations. It should be 7 strand I think.

Lubricate rope to fit it through a tight hole?

Paracord = parachute cord. Beloved of the army and extremely high size to strength ratio. It's a few mil thick. The length I was meaning on the wedges was that if they are short (as defined by the space they have to fit into) then you won't be able to keep adjusting them if the rope gets...

Lubricate rope to fit it through a tight hole?

Looks good and has made me think about making something similar for my niece. To tighten, perhaps loop some strong cord (maybe a couple of loops of paracord) around either knot and then use some form of twisting to pull the knots together. That way, you could continue to tighten them in the...

unsure about what it is-a newbie question?

Peeking out from the underside of both sides of the shelf are what looks to be battens already there, which makes me wonder if the shelf is a reused panel with those cams already fitted from a previous incarnation? Have a look and see if there are any screws or glue between the battens and the...

    New to the forum

Welcome to the forum Mike. I live at the other end of Cheshire and there is an Axminster shop in Warrington, which is an excellent place to start when considering anything to do with turning...their after-sales service is superb. Best thing to do is to have a play on a few different lathes and...

    AW1416VS Lathe high pitched whine

It's not SWMBO on at you for spending so much time in your shed when the grass needs cutting is it? I've heard a similar high-pitched whine and it doesn't matter whether the lathe is turned on or not...

    Which pyrography is best?

Good question Matt, as I will soon be buying one. The only one I've heard recommended was the Peter Childs one which Tracy Owen raves about. £99 I think from Peter Child's website.

    Today's efforts

Cheers Nev. Not a bowling wood, but a section of a 4x4 blank I acquired. This was the second one I have made from it and I love the heft and finish you get from it. I'd love to try making a large bowl from it, but I reckon the cost would be too great.

Tuning Oval tool handles, old style

I'm sure I'm missing something fairly obvious here, but how do you turn an oval?

    Today's efforts

I managed to get a full day in today, so here's a look at what I managed. A maple cheeseboard with a two-quid charity shop bowl as the lid A lignum carving mallet with a two-tone handle asked for by a friend A cheapo crab with a tin turned into it (again, a request from a friend)

    Burr bowl

Thanks Paul. I'm not overly happy with the base either, it was the first foot which I have taken off using reverse-chucking and then sanding and I realised once I took it off the lathe that I hadn't rounded it properly. I did think about trying to round it in a lathe mounted drill chuck and...
