Aldi bandsaw - got a dodgy one or are they all poo?

I bought an Aldi bandsaw back in Nov/Dec, whenever they came out last. I swapped for a tuffsaws blae straight away (the one linked in this thread). I did have a bit of an issue at first, but I hadn't tuned it properly. I tuned the saw in line with the video shown earlier (I checked a few others...

    Oak door

In addition you need to be sure what the listing covers. It may only cover certain aspects of the building. https://historicengland.org.uk/advice/your-home/owning-historic-property/listed-building/

    Construction techniques for van cabinetry

My last van I converted myself from a transit. I generally used 4mm ply on softwood frames. I didn't create sandwiches, but single ply seemed strong enough. Consider what is actually needed inside. I made and put in the whole moorcaravan requirements, bed that folds out to a minimum of 6', sink...

Just bought a couple of work benches

Interested too and just found them on Homebase. Back up to £299, so if they were on offer the bank holiday price has now ended, or was limited to certain customers. https://www.homebase.co.uk/36-mobile-workbench-with-tool-storage/12840868.html

    New Fence Posts?

Recently had to replace a run of fencing. Standard 1.8m panels. I've done enough digging in the garden that I'm getting someone in to do it. Both fencers suggested using post savers (Guaranteed Long Life Fence Post Protection Since 1994 | Postsaver) on standard posts (can't remember whether they...

    Small fitting facemasks

Thanks. Bit far to get him to a PPE supplier at the moment, so I have just ordered the 3m 6001 via a chep deal on ebay. I had a bigger size in the past, which worked for me. Encouraging non-floor working is a slow and frustrating exercise. He has a workbench, but it quickly piles high with...

    Small fitting facemasks

Hi All, Looking to get my 12yr old a facemask. He's fairly handy with modelling, and minor metalworking (brass, copper and bits of tin cans) using hammers, dremel and filing. While there isn't much in the way of dust created at the moment I want to encourage him to actively use PPE before he...

    Doh! First aid kit....

I agree, don't go to hospital alone. Unfortunately in the UK the first step in looking for emergency aid has by default become 'call the ambulance'. We have become reluctant to call on friends and neighbours to aid us, and this had led to a dependency on a resource that has become restricted. In...

    Doh! First aid kit....

While cost of an ambulance isn't an issue in the UK, reponse times are. For various reasons, and Covid is amongst that, but by far not the only one, ambulances are hard to come by. I don't work for the health service, but someone close is involved in urgent care. There are 4 categories of...

Aldi Bandsaw ( new model) coming soon. Buy it or choose other model

Mine arrived today. I got a brief email from XPD on Friday but as I was busy I missed it. I saw the driver pull up and dump the box on the floor outside the door, so opened it before he tried to ring the bell (if he was). It's a bit battered and the plastic straps have obviously been used to...

Sealing 'Buffalo Board' / Birch Plywood Edges

Go to a playground and see what they use. It's been a couple of years since I had to troll down and stand around one while my kids attempted to kill themselves (or eah other), but I seem to remember that the edges are just rounded off. If they are treated then it's always a neat job, I can't...

Baltic birch plywood for furniture in Midlands.

No idea on midlands supplier, but just checked Robbins online price list. £124 for a sheet of 18mm at the moment. That's about 2x the price I paid back in March. https://www.robbins.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Retail-Price-Guide.pdf...

    Cost of Birch Ply

I bought a sheet of 18mm from Robins 2 weeks ago. I paid less than £100 for it. I had overheard the week before that they had bought 500 sheets before teh price went up. I can't find the receipt but looking at the online price guide (exc VAT):- April 2021 2440 x 1220 x 18 mm Birch...

    Partition Wall Garage

If it's a new build house rather than garage then PP may well be needed to do any form of conversion. And with new builds there is often a requirement to have a certain amount of parking space of which the garage will undoubtably count towards and therefore PP may well be denied.

Using washing machine motors for workshop machines

That looks almost exactly like the motor on my old Meddings Pillar drill - including the state of assembly! Colour and mount are the same, just mine is a little longer. Is this an old washing maching motor? I had assumed the one on mine was original, but perhaps it isn't.

New toy - Meddings Pillar drill

Thread resuscitation time. The drill has sat in a state of being apart (but mainly cleaned and painted) in the garage for well over year. After kicking the casing and cursing a few times I've decided to get back on with sorting it out. The motor is the last major part. I had taken it apart and...

    Pillar drill

Looks like the one quarter the way down here http://www.lathes.co.uk/pollard/ I used some 'professional' paint stripper. I can't remember what it was off hand, but came with lots of warnings and I had to declare that I was a professional and wouldn't stuff myself in an enclosed space with it...

    Pillar drill

Depends on the state of it. Clean it up and see what state is it in. With my Meddings (still not put back together due to time...) I cleaned the grease and rust and decided that there wasn't much point in trying to save the original paint job as it was too bashed up. So I repainted with a...
