    Social distancing, .. what's that?

Actually, the article is largely about the incorrect interpretation of information out there, some deliberate, and which is disseminated on social media (and posts like this) which give a voice to conspiracy theorists and ultracrepidarians. I would have thought that the solution to reacting to...

    Social distancing, .. what's that?

It could pay to read this article. Particularly the armchair experts who appear to post ad nauseam on the subject. https://theconversation.com/now-everyones-a-statistician-heres-what-armchair-covid-experts-are-getting-wrong-144494

    Wagyu

Not sure about venison price comparison as I'm lucky enough to have a neighbour who's a hunter so I get my venison and boar pretty cheap (and fresh). You're right about the price of lamb though and the quality here is lower. Most NZ quality lamb is exported leaving us the poorer quality meat...

    Wagyu

152 GBP per kg is a heck of a price! We pay NZ$120 /kg (about GBP60/kg) for chilled grass fed Wagyu with a marble score of 3 - 4. Pete

    Model ship build

Great work Ian and welcome to retirement :) The model is beautifully detailed. It took me back to when I was a nipper and would visit the model ships exhibition in Sunderland Museum. (Wonder if it's still there?) Pete

    Clear instructions from China

I was not trying to 'fault' anyone. Many humorous incidents arise from words having different connotations in different languages. Perhaps your sense of humour is lying mouldering... :)

    Clear instructions from China

One of my favourites was a business sign in Hong Kong advertising 'The Wilful Shipping Co.' (Motto: "We don't care where you want your goods shipped. We'll send them where we want them to go.") Oh yes, and the "Agro Bank" in KL. (Just don't ask for an overdraft.) Pete

    Table staining advice.

No, the wash coat is applied before any stain in order to get even penetration of the stain and avoid 'splotching'. There are a lot of different materials that can be used for pre-staining/finishing, often going under the name of 'sanding sealer', but you need to select one which will be...

    Another Joke

You might have seen in the 'Tools' section that I'm restoring a couple of Stanley No. 5's. One made in the US and one in Canada so I named them Trump and Trudeau to distinguish them. Yesterday I was working on flattening Trump's sole when SWMBO brought me a cuppa and I told her about the...

    Table staining advice.

Basically, what Chris said above. You need to apply a wash coat over the whole surface to avoid 'splotching'. It's also important to select the type of stain you are going to use. If you use shellac (preferably de-waxed) as a wash coat you will need to avoid alcohol based stains. Best choice IMO...

    Leather desk top

Thanks for the link Richard. I'm not stuck on using real leather if a substitute is just as good but I thought that I might have a go at tooling the leather using some shop made punches. I don't know if a leather substitute would take this? Pete

    The saga of Bobs conk'

A hammer and chisel? There are at least a dozen skilled guys on the forum could have done that for you at half the cost and supplied their own tools. (hammer) Hope you're feeling good. :) Pete

    Hancock's Half Hour

On the subject of children. One Texas county has just (today) announced that they have 85 infants (under age 1) with the virus. I don't know what this equates to as a percentage of infants in the county and of course whether they would transmit the virus to others but it perhaps cautions us not...

    Face masks

I totally agree. The benefits of mask wearing alone are limited. But allied with all the other measures (social distancing, hand washing etc.) they have been shown to have an impact. But only if everyone adopts the measures. A couple of months of inconvenience can make a heck of a difference to...

    Face masks

As someone with COPD myself, of course I don't expect someone with the same condition to suffer further breathing restriction. What I would expect is that they limit their exposure and not simply think "Oh well. I'm excused." and wander around in public. The evidence seems to be that, taken in...

    Face masks

Certainly puzzling. Have read the recent UK mask regulations; shoppers but not shop staff, not required in taxis, not required by office workers (presumably they can socially distance at work), not required if you have a breathing problem. All very strange and very loose.

    Leather desk top

Thanks for the link. So essentially, just laying a flat piece of leather in a matching depth recess. I was wrestling with all sorts of scenarios which would have resulted in trying to get a neat fold at each of the corners. I was forgetting the KISS principle. Keep It Simple, Stupid ! :) Pete

What’s the best thing you’ve learnt from this forum

That there are a lot of skilled and knowledgeable people out there who will never be widely recognized or appreciated.
