Calling all entomologist - i hope these aren't wood borers

At least you don't find these in your woodpile as we sometimes do. Pete

Calling all entomologist - i hope these aren't wood borers

Not sure from the pics you've got. Can you get a closer look? Maybe catch and look at it through a magnifying glass? Here's a pic of a woodworm beetle. Pete

    Mushy Peas

Eating mushy peas in Queenstown sounds a bit like scoffing bread and dripping in Paris. Pete

    Tool cleaning and restoration Links

I restored an old No 4 using the citric acid technique to remove the rust. After flattening the sole and generally cleaning-up, I put the body out in the sun to warm (the warm oven suggestion sounds just as good) then smeared it in lanolin (plentiful here in NZ :) ). Once cool, I wiped off the...

    I like fixing things

I do like restoring things if that counts. Particularly old mantle clocks which often involves repairing the movements as well as refurbishing the cases. Pete

    Mushy Peas

Not been to either of the museums but I did get to see Tane Mahuta (Lord of the Forest) when we holidayed in Kerikeri about 20 years back. Next time you're over :) take a trip to see the Redwood Forest (Whakarewarewa) at Rotorua. IMHO it knocks the Muir (San Fransico) Redwood experience into a...

    Mushy Peas

What? Did you miss out on the 'Big Carrot' (Ohakune) or the 'Big Trout'(Gore). Oh dear...

    Mushy Peas

Pretty common advertising slogan over here, Phil. The popular soft drink 'Lemon and Paeroa' is advertised as 'World Famous in New Zealand'. It's a tongue in cheek acknowledgement of our size and remoteness that seems to have worked in our favour recently :D

    Trend Diamond Cross Sharpening Plates

Thanks for the responses all. I might suck it up and buy new plates. Any recommendations? Pete

    Hancock's Half Hour

That's interesting. You say you're self-employed making goods for export and yet you travel abroad 'less than once a year'. How do you keep in touch with your markets? Assess new potential? Expand your customer base? Or are we talking about making and selling on E-bay and the like? Pete

    Trend Diamond Cross Sharpening Plates

Thanks Wilfage. Yes, I clean the plate after every use with the eraser. The two sides do look different but there is no getting away from the evidence of all the tool steel that comes off when using the side marked 1000 as opposed to the lack of it on the 300 side. I have to confess, though that...

Pleased to be of assistance, even though all the cards on the table seem to have been mine. :|

    Hancock's Half Hour

OK. I'll play the game and answer your questions even though the answers are not as cut and dried as your questions (life never is). 1. I am 69 2. I retired less than a year ago. 3. I worked as a pipeline consulting engineer in the oil, gas and petrochemical industries, (both transmission and...

    Hancock's Half Hour

I've been out and about since the restrictions eased here in NZ and see no signs of 'paranoia'. NZ and Oz are in talks about opening a travel 'bubble' between the two countries. If this excludes visitors from countries who have signally failed in their response to the pandemic - so much the...

Are my chisel sides skewing my bevel?

As Andy says, are your chisels seating properly in the guide? Take a look at the following: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBHd7x6ySSQ Admittedly the guide in the video is an Eclipse copy, but you can see that the chisel recesses needed to be deepened for the chisels to sit square in the guide...

    Trend Diamond Cross Sharpening Plates

I recently (6 months ago) bought a 300/1000 Trend DC plate and have been using it quite happily and successfully. I have noted, however, that the side marked 1000 removes appreciably more steel faster than the side marked 300. Both sides have had reasonably even use. Could it be that the sides...

    Space X

As I said and as a retired engineer myself, I am very impressed by the technology involved in the recovery system of the first stage booster. For the rest, the Gucci spacesuits and cabin display by Samsung technologies seems simply cosmetic if functional, it still only combines to put men into...
