    Leather desk top

I'm planning a replica writing box, something not unlike the one in the pic below, to store the collection of pens I've garnered over more than fifty years (fountain, mapping, calligraphic and drawing types). Can anyone advise me on the best method of attaching the leather to the surface? Do I...

How to Line Boxes & Drawers

Great tutorial Custard. I've never felt (no pun intended) that I had the skill to try the 'real thing' when lining boxes and have always stuck with flocking. Your post has given me the confidence to have a go. Pete

    Mitre shooting board

Nice one Hornbeam. I have been planning to make a 'donkey's ear' as my next jig but I can see definite advantages with your design over the conventional one. Pete

    Face masks

I find it hard to believe that this discussion is still going on. While the evidence for the effectiveness of masks is empirical, taken with other measures (social distancing, regular hand washing, avoiding large gatherings etc.) it has been shown to have an impact. Look at New York City/State...

thoughts on construction of a record cabinet

Back on topic. While always favouring solid wood lipping, you can make your own iron-on edge banding. Cut your veneer strips slightly wider than needed. Dampen the 'show' surface to reduce curling and flip over. Using a mixture of 9 parts PVA glue (yellow or white) to one part water, brush on...

I guess she waits for her annual tattoo until she visits Edinburgh. :D

    Nails

I read that the nail salons and tattoo parlours are reopening in the UK. I hope our forum members will be taking advantage of this and eagerly await some pics of the results. Pete

Restoring and converting an old wooden box

Better to plug the holes with matching wood but you would need a plug cutter with a matching sized drill bit. Carefully matching the grain on the plug with that on the wood they will be pretty well invisible and they will take whatever finish you decide to go with on the whole box. Pete

    UK as an "Emerging Economy"?

My motives for starting this thread seem to have been (willfully?) misconstrued. Your opinions on NZ, while accurate, are not what I was after. I do, after all, live here and am more than aware of its failings (and successes). At least your dismissive post stretched from an earlier single...

    UK as an "Emerging Economy"?

I think I need to explain my reason for starting this post as it seems to have scratched a few sores. I effectively ceased to reside in the UK in the mid 70's, travelling back only once or twice a year to visit my elderly parents in the North-East. It was noticeable then that things were...

    UK as an "Emerging Economy"?

Yes, but was that because the UK 'borrowed' its way out of the problem?

    UK as an "Emerging Economy"?

Thank you lurker and Terry. :) This is a 'General Chat' / 'Off Topic' post and is intended to stimulate discussion but it seems to have raised some hackles which was not my intention. It is sometimes interesting and informative to read how outsiders view a situation. How do other forum members...

    UK as an "Emerging Economy"?

A not very appetizing extract from Bank of America economic strategists. London (CNN Business) "Brexit and the coronavirus pandemic are reshaping the UK economy. Could it end up looking more like Turkey, Mexico and Argentina than France, Germany and the United States? Some analysts on Wall...

    Hancock's Half Hour

I read today that, based on studies in Spain, the evidence suggests that "herd immunity" is a non-starter as only 5% of those who had recovered from Covid had developed antibodies, the remaining 95% being susceptible to re-infection. To quote The Lancet on this subject: "In light of these...

I see Ghislaine Maxwell has contracted Covid in prison. Hmm

No doubt somewhere in the universe there is an alien p*ss artist telling his wife he was abducted by Earthlings as she glares at him with her six eyes.

    Hancock's Half Hour

Surprised to read the E111 described as 'for emergencies only', perhaps things have changed. Back in '81 we were resident in Belgium. Our daughter, then aged four, was diagnosed as needing a tonsillectomy and ear grommets inserted. This was not an emergency operation but the local hospital...

    Women. Who needs 'em...

Sorry to hear that, mate. My digs at womanhood only come from the secure position of having a missus who is also my best friend. We celebrate our Golden Anniversary in September and I can only imagine how I'd feel in your situation. Pete

Mike. You've stopped taking your tablets again, haven't you? What did the doctor tell you...?
