    New Window recommendatons

I agree, there is nothing that joins together the words "victorian" and "upvc". If you have the workshop space this is a terrific woodworking project. Even if you factor in say £2K for additional tools (like I did) you will still come out well on top if you make them yourself (just don't price...

    Dust extraction for hobby woodworker

......and just to throw in a curve ball - wood dust in a commercial shop should be classified as an ATEX area....

    Dust extraction for hobby woodworker

The M Class standard does indeed refer to filtration standard amongst other things. The "sensor" on M Class machines is to all intents a crock of ****. The EU specification requires an indicator that shows when airflow drops below 20m/s with the largest hose the manufacture supplies for that...

CAN ANYONE RECOMMEND A POWERFUL DUST EXTRACTION SOLUTION?

Think about flow and vacuum as you would voltage and current. You get max vacuum at zero flow and maximum flow with zero vacuum. Bottom line. There is no substitute for power. You can muck around with pipe sizes, but all you do is change the flow/vacuum ratio. Get the biggest vacuum pump you can...

    Thinking of Planer thicknesser purchase

I have one of the cheapo titan/whatevers. As a jointer it's absolute rubbish because the tables don't stay parallel and flat. As a thicknesser it works just fine - I modified mine with a longer bed, and "adapted" the guard because I didn't have a vacuum that could cope with the chippings...

HVLP or other sprayer advice please

I'm not an experienced sprayer, but I bought a unit similar to this https://www.wagner-group.com/en/do-it-y ... 90-flexio/ for a window project, and honestly can say I think it will do everything you want. Before you spend big numbers I'd get one and try it - all plastic heads that are easy to...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Not sure - but doesn't show through the white paint - I sprayed them with primer and Teknos Aquatop - and still have all my fingers.... :D

    BAND SAW ADVICE

I ripped a lot of 120mm accoya recently into planks on a record 350 and it was the dogs danglies - cut accurately. no issues. I am using tuff saw blades. I've found it easy to set up and keep set up.

Timber choice for a large wooden greenhouse

I can vouch for the stability of accoya. I made some sash windows a couple of years ago and they haven't shifted a mm - sashes are fairly tight tolerances and all slide perfectly. I used teknos aquatop and primer sprayed with an HVLP gun. I think if you swallow the additional cost at the...

    Bandsaw setup issue

Hmm. I have a bog standard record 350 that I use with a tufsaw 3/4 blade and standard record guides. I have no issues whatsoever. I can easily skinny a 2-3mm slice off a 150mm plank. Never tried anything deeper. I also have had no issues when switching to smaller blade sizes. Is it possible that...

Newbie advice, please help if you can

I suggest a good starting point is to look at how other similar products are constructed and copy them. A quick look at google images for e.g."wooden planters" brings up loads of suggestions - many are either framed or use alternating butt joints.

Business Rates on my garden workshop

Definitely say your workshop is a domestic hobby room as the implication of it being a business are huge. Rubbish collection for one - as soon as it's a business I'm sure they will charge for collection. Then there's insurance etc etc. You have no visitors to your property and do not sell from...

    Vacuum Cleaner Bags

When it is just for your own personal use, you can of course use whatever you like. However, if employees are involved HSE are on a roll to move everyone to M Class, H Class and ATEX rated vacs depending on application. Problem is if you ignore the HSE advice and an employee gets a lung issue...

    Is this woodworm ?

whichever type of beetle it is, it is definitely not a "weevil". All weevils have distinct "knees" in their antennas - a long segment and then short bits. withe antennas often held up with the "knee" bent

Theory of interior house door (and frame) fitting

Maybe a bit of both. If you are painting, you could use mdf arch which is easy enough to relieve at the back leaving a lip to sit tight on the lining. If you only want to relieve the middle, clamp it on the bench so its bowed and just plane out the back where you need to.

Theory of interior house door (and frame) fitting

+1. If you are fitting liners and doors at the same time, position the liner and fix the hinge side first and cut the hinges and get the door swinging. Position t'other leg of the liner so the door closes snug, and fix the other leg. I tend to often cut folding wedges to pack if there is much of...

Rebuilding joists on Victorian suspended floor

Mike/Heimlaga - not trying to pick an argument - genuinely interested in your opinions. My own house project had a rotten suspended wood floor very similar to this in the front room and flags on sand in the back 2 rooms. I discussed the options with both my builder who was doing a small...
