"Off the shelf" vs DIY workbenches

I was just about to make the exact same comment. I've been using that video series and posting a WIP on this forum. They have a video series for two styles of workbench. I bought both videos, watched them both and decided on the English style for no reason other than aesthetics. I would...

    Struggling With Motivation

I was thinking about this earlier. The one time that I'm almost guaranteed to follow through with something is when I have some pressure to actually finish. In work, the pressure is my boss, at home say with DIY projects it's my other boss. When it is in other areas it is very easy to not...

Yet another english style workbench build

Thanks. I'm very pleased with how it has turned out. I just want to get the last few bits finished, then I can't wait to get cracking on something new and put the bench to use. I think I'll go for something a bit smaller and lighter for the next project. Has anyone on here ever made a...

    Struggling With Motivation

Agh, shiny object syndrome! I too am afflicted and have never found anything that works 100% for me. The closer I get to finishing something the more attractive other ideas become and the harder it becomes to finish. I usually move on and don't ever go back to the original thing because it's...

Help with a stubborn double through mortise and tenon

Thanks for the advice. Someone on here suggested beech would be good for the benchtop. I'll see how this pine gets on as an experiment and swap it out before it becomes a complete tube! I'm planning on putting a 50/50 mix of white spirit and boiled linseed oil. I'll remember that about the...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Please tell me that this is your second piece of furniture, but you're a professional musical instrument maker or I might as well give up now! Well done, It looks great.

Help with a stubborn double through mortise and tenon

There's always a but! So you're saying my beautiful face vice is doomed from the start! I did consider using a hardwood for the vice and first plank on the top of the workbench. If it starts to move around I'll swap it out with something nicer. I don't think I could make it thinner with it...

Yet another english style workbench build

The vice went together great. I had to slightly adjust the running gear and it ran very smoothly. It also held nice and tight even though the guide bar isn't glued up yet. The quality of that screw had me imagining the whole bench made out of maple - it'd be indestructible! The whole...

Yet another english style workbench build

I gave the top a tidy up after planing across the grain and rounded off the sharp edges. I will give it a final flatten right at the end... Next, with some much-needed help. was to flip the beast onto its top and then make and fit the running gear for the vice. Then while it's being...

Yet another english style workbench build

Right, the home straight I think! For once I think I'm actually going to finish something I've started. First I decided to finish the plaining stop, so I plained a piece down to size with a heavy camber on the iron... That obviously caused lots of tearout... So within a final couple of...

Help with a stubborn double through mortise and tenon

Thanks. I watched that trick on YouTube a while back (think it was Paul Sellers maybe) and I went ahead and tested my adjustable square (A cheapo B&Q effort) and it was slightly off. I then tried my old small set square and that was good, although it only had to be square over 6 inches, then...

Help with a stubborn double through mortise and tenon

I've bought that Crubber (I think it was called that) by benchcrafted. I'll see how that gets on when it comes. I was eyeing up some of the Missus' handbags but was warned off them!

Help with a stubborn double through mortise and tenon

I haven't tried it the other way - That'll be interesting to try! I'm pretty happy with it now and it runs nice and smooth while dry fitted. I didn't think about that fix if it goes wrong. These are the tips I'm having to learn as I go. cheers.

Help with a stubborn double through mortise and tenon

That's the one! Right, I'm just about to get some suede ordered fr the vice, some dowel for the drawbore tenon and more boiled linseed oil - oh and some epoxy to put on the bottom of the feet for when the rain comes under the door! I'm terrible for not finishing things, but this thing is...

Help with a stubborn double through mortise and tenon

I managed to get it closer by cleaning up one of the shoulders. Although I think I said I was 100% sure they had no high spots, I found one straight away this morning. I also checked the mortise holes were all square (using the tip posted on this thread) apart from one of the sides. I took a...

Help with a stubborn double through mortise and tenon

Thanks, tTrees That's a great tip I'm going to try! That's similar to the tip on checking the mortise for squareness... has me wondering why I didn't think of it! Instead I'm trying to balance a square on tiny little shoulders! Thanks for the help. I'll have a go.

Help with a stubborn double through mortise and tenon

That's a good point. I'm going to ensure the face is flat (again), check the mortise holes are square (now I know how to) and see if I can get it better then move on. I will fit the screw, do the dry fit as you say and see what it's like. Cheers

Help with a stubborn double through mortise and tenon

I like your thinking! That's what I was thinking but not admitting to myself! It's not square, it is slightly off and if It'd just sit flush I think it'd be close to right - it'd be better than it is anyway. I have thought about calling it good enough because the vice guide underneath is able...

Help with a stubborn double through mortise and tenon

Ha, yes. Why didn't I think of that! I was scratching my head thinking there's got to be a way to do something so simple. I'm on that tomorrow! I have a sturdy thick rule that'll fit through then use my small set square against the face to see how square it is inside.... I'm betting not...
