Diamond plate flatness and card scrapers

I guess that's progress, but doesn't look as nice as yours. How important is scraper thickness? Mine seems thick enough that bending it is a real pain.

Diamond plate flatness and card scrapers

That's the method I can't get to work acceptably. But maybe his plate is flat...

Diamond plate flatness and card scrapers

Thanks for the detail, that's clear now. Interestingly, rosewood fretboards is what I'm trying to tackle. I'm turning a burr with my current method but it just tears out the slightly cross-grained rosewood. Will try yours and report back. Do you think I'm likely to get significantly worse...

Diamond plate flatness and card scrapers

Thanks, a bunch of stuff I didn't know in there. I'm a bit confused about what to reference for the 10 and 20 degree angles. It seems you mean with respect to the face (ie. face flat on stone = 0 degrees?)

Diamond plate flatness and card scrapers

I have an EZE Lap diamond plate, 600 and 1200 grit. Sharpening plane blades and chisels, followed by a strop, gets me nice sharp edges. I'm really struggling to sharpen card scrapers such that I can take nice shavings with them. I have a proper burnisher and have tried multiple techniques. On...

    Festool hose blocked !

Hmm... I just got a MIDI and had a look at the dust bag to see if it was full earlier. The suction really seems to compress the dust into a brick-like consistency. I was wondering how you know when it's full and decided I'd just swap bags when stuff no longer gets sucked up. But now I'm kind of...

Your best (and worst) / most surprising woodworking related purchase this year

Best: Festool OF1400 router. I don't think i've seen a single bit of sawdust escape its dust collection yet. Genuine pleasure to use. Worst: Nothing this year. Learnt from previous years not to cheap out on tools. Most surprising: Festool Kapex KS60 mitre saw. I'm not surprised it's good. I'm...

Can you Joint on a router table?

As others have said, you can, but some router tables might make it harder than it's worth. An alternative way to joint edges with a router is to clamp something straight and flat (MDF, plywood) along the desired line and use a template bit. This has the added advantage that you can control where...

How do these cuts not cause kick back?

That happened to me on my very first time using a router table, electric guitar body and everything, using one of those large Radian flush trim bits. I'd watched a video by Crimson Guitars (who I love) where Ben essentially free hands removing a mm at a time before finally having the guide...

How to pare tenons plumb and square

Can't remember what the max depth is, but if you remove the depth stop from the shaft, you gain an extra ~10mm.

    Router table flatness

Sitrep I discovered that huge chunks of cast iron are surprisingly flexible. Lifting the corner that's low makes the table flat... more or less. It's a little more complicated than that since it seems to chase the error around the table a few times, but with a few shims scattered about, I've...

    Router table flatness

Not the edge, just a gradual increase in height from the corners of the table as you move towards the centre.

    Router table flatness

An Axminster rep on their forum answered someone's question that the tolerance was 0.5mm diagonally. Could end up with something that's worse than what I have now but still within spec, and it's a bit of a nuisance item to return But will contact them nevertheless and see what the options are.

    Router table flatness

I came across something similar on another forum. The idea was that the weight of the router flattens the table a bit rather than causing it to sag. But I don't know if that'd even be a factor with cast iron? Alternatively, maybe it's easier to slide the workpiece around when there's a crown...

    Router table flatness

Hi all I just received a UJK cast iron router table top when it was 15% off a few days ago with the intention of building it into a workbench. It's an absolute unit at 815x615mm but I wasn't too surprised to see it wasn't dead flat. Across one of the diagonals I can comfortably fit a 0.25mm...
