How many times will we ....

I'm working away in North Wales and have driven from Buxton Derbyshire to here and back twice in the last week and not been stopped. I did see a police woman pulling over random cars at one point but just managed to drive past. My brother in law came to visit today and did the same trip, and he...

    Bowed Bellied Chisels

You're worrying about nothing. It just needs the end of the back flattening, say the last inch and then sharpening. Don't get hung up on using straight edges against your chisels there really is no point. Get them sharpened and used.

End grain gluing. We all know how weak that is, don't we....

Is the one piece of timber accoya? What kind of glue did you use?

    Windowboard installation

Why don't you make it easy for yourself and do a butt joint, then pin or glue a half round moulding on the front edge?

    Masonry screws - skirting board

Guess I'm in the minority then, it works well for me so I'll stick to it, they have an advantage over plugs and screws in that if you pull the skirting in too far you can pull back out easily by undoing the fixing a bit. As for frame fixings not working with impact drivers I have no idea what...

    Masonry screws - skirting board

I find the complete opposite, small gaps at the top are fine but anything bigger looks terrible even with good filling.

    Masonry screws - skirting board

Obviously depends on the type of walls you're fixing to, nice flat brick walls sure you can use plugs, horrible wonky stone walls then frame fixings are a lot better.

    Masonry screws - skirting board

Frame screws are perfect for skirting; especially if the walls aren't perfectly straight you can pull the gaps up tight. I use these, you have to drill a 6mm hole first. I use a 15mm forstener bit to sink the heads then cut plugs with a plug cutter to hide the holes...

Why safety goggles are important ....

Since I had an accident with my eye a few years ago I always wear safety goggles when doing anything remotely dangerous. I damaged the lens and pupil in my eye at work when I was breaking some slate up with a hammer to use as joist packers and a piece flung off and stuck in my eye. Its a bloody...

    Electrical question

I'm not an electrician but 16mm twin and earth sounds overkill for even 9.5kw. I'm pretty sure a 6mm twin and earth would have been enough for the original shower, but they have probably put larger incase the shower was ever changed in the future.

Damaged Plastic window seal .. fill it???

That's in a very obvious place where you're going to really notice any repair. I know you can get upvc window repair kits to fill holes etc but I haven't ever used one so can't comment, plus they cost more than a new cover cill would. I would replace the cill it's pretty easy to do so. No harm...

    Windowboard installation

You can get it into position, but it's bloody awkward and your measuring and angles have to be spot on. You might have to undercut the far edge which you'd be lowering into position last ( which in this case would be the left hand cut)

    Windowboard installation

If you used a sheet of MRMDF you could cut the full shape out without having a joint in the corner, plus you won't have to worry about movement with it. If you're tiling above the worktop again though I would tile the windowsill too.

What are you really bad at?

I'm just as bad, my swimming instructor when I was a kid told my mam I must have really heavy bones because I naturally sink and most people float  I do love swimming on holiday though but that's not swimming lengths

What are you really bad at?

I have actually tried the fairy liquid trick before and did have some success, I think mine was too watery though possibly. I've watched people do it and I copy exactly the same and mine never looks as good. I can do it perfect around kitchen worktops, baths, tiles, shower trays etc it's just...
