    Unwelcome visitors

Thanks profchris, the PDF pretty well describes exactly what we're seeing. I know it's a bit late but we will light some citronella today and see if it deters new additions.

We only found three so nothing to excessive. We had them swept a couple of months ago...

    Unwelcome visitors

The next little challenge in our renovation project relates to some unwanted visitors. We have a surplus of flies in one (and only one) of our rooms. They seem to arrive here and mostly die. We can hoover up hundreds of carcasses at a time only to find a similar number within a few hours. We...

Attic Floor replacement / wood shrinkage?

So, the floor saga is finally moving forward. We've found an outfit that comes close to what I would call a "proper" builders yard in Switzerland (https://www.reguscireco.ch/). We visited their Biasca store and enquired about what they can offer and the range is vast (thicknesses, widths and...

Attic Floor replacement / wood shrinkage?

Thanks SPB, it also seems 27cm it the thickest readily available here in Switzerland which kind of helps the decision process. Pete

Attic Floor replacement / wood shrinkage?

An Aga is certainly a candidate as the house has no heating at all. Looking at the current offering some of the newer ones have integrated induction hobs so a good compromise. Our direction is semi-commercial rather than full on as we will have 8 to 10 guests max. For the floor we make...

Intro and first project (not such a trivial one)

I find google image search good for diy stuff translations. They mention both ticks (which I thought were blood suckers - I also know Lyme Disease fart to well but that's another story) and a beetle like creature which is probably my issue. I will let the specialists sort as I need it fixed...

Intro and first project (not such a trivial one)

I flushed it with copious amount of WD40 which removed a huge amount of brown gunk. It turns a lot smoother now so I will just refit it. Given the door it is from I don't want it to look shiny and new. That wouldn't work at all.

Intro and first project (not such a trivial one)

Thank you, I have become obsessed with old door locks since buying the house. It's cleaned and I will refit it next weekend. It is off an outbuilding in a safe part of the world (it hasn't had a lock fitted for the past month or so, so no issue)

Intro and first project (not such a trivial one)

So, we have decided on tongue and groove pine boards for the floor. We visited the house last weekend and I lifted some boards so I could measure the gap between the joists, the intention was to order the wood and do the whole job during the first week in August (work vacation). As soon as I...

Attic Floor replacement / wood shrinkage?

Thanks, It is an old house with 6 bedrooms and there is a cottage in the garden (which has been used as a shed). Our plan is to do the renovations to a good enough standard to open a B&B in a few years. Fitting the kitchen out will be one of the last steps. We intend to install something...

Attic Floor replacement / wood shrinkage?

A small world. I used to live in Uetikon am See and Mannedorf. We are now in Wädenswil just over the pond. The house is a 1895 tessinerhaus. It needs a lot of work, so, whilst I would like to avoid rework my current focus is on stabilizing the building. I also want to ensure it is usable by...

Attic Floor replacement / wood shrinkage?

Thanks, could be an option. I would want to eventually cover it but that could be a good first step (and is about half the price of my original plan

Attic Floor replacement / wood shrinkage?

I am currently looking at a Douglas Fir T&G. Part of my problem is that I am based in Switzerland so all of the info is in German. This is the one https://www.bauhaus.ch/de/rauspund-douglasie-20833897

Attic Floor replacement / wood shrinkage?

I am about to replace 75 m2 of attic floor in my renovation project. The house has not been occupied for a few years and has no insulation at all. I want to replace the floor before insulating the attic ceiling (as I would like something to stand on that might take my weight). The floorboard...

Okay, I will look at the PM option. Bis später Andy!

Intro and first project (not such a trivial one)

Hi AES Thank you for the welcome. A large part of my challenge with the project is understanding what the Swissies are going on about in Schweizerdeusch and working out what I need to buy to get stuff done. Perhaps we can compare notes on that? This is further complicated by the house being in...

Intro and first project (not such a trivial one)

Wow, that's quite a project. Fortunately our place is structurally sound on the outside and the roof was replaced about 15 years ago. Fortunate because the walls are stone and about 60cm thick. I think it was actually your response to a vapor barrier question that gave me a few pointers. The...

Intro and first project (not such a trivial one)

Hi, I have just found this site whilst looking for info on vapour control layers. I quickly found out what I was looking for so figured I would join. I guess the first thing to do is to introduce myself and my current project (which will take a few years to complete). My name is Pete, I am a...
