    New Year, new Bandsaw!

As someone new to bandsaws, with no 16 amp sockets and not much space or height in the workshop, I went with the Laguna 14BX. Spent years saving and deciding. If I had more experience or fettling skills, more space or the ability to move heavier saws on my own i would have explored bigger second...

    Tell me about bandsaws please

Didi you mention budget? I recently bought a Laguna 14BX on sale as my first bandsaw. I spent years debating what saw to get. I had no experience of bandsaws so wasn't confident to go second hand. The Laguna was the most power and biggest capacity i could get that runs on a 13 amp plug. So far...

Would a record 52 or 52 1/2 work on my workbench? Alternatives?

I'm not planning to recess the rear plate. So i can fix through the rail, add spacers in the vertical gap and fix through the top and if i need to replace the top it's it's easy to do just by removing the vertical bolts?

Would a record 52 or 52 1/2 work on my workbench? Alternatives?

Never had a workbench vice but after a recent project decided it was something i needed to add. I have a slightly unconventional bench, 90mm square legs with a 2x4 top frame that supports an 18mm MFT style top. I built it to aid in building my kitchen but it's proven to be solid as and heavy...

My first little box - a late Christmas gift for my daughter

I sanded to 400 and finished with Chestnuts Sanding Sealer and Acrylic Lacquer aerosols and a coat of microcrystalline wax. I stupidly glued the handle on before adding the leather thread so had to keep wrapping it under and over and of course when i got to the end i'd cut it to short. Oh well...

My first little box - a late Christmas gift for my daughter

I wanted a chamfer on the lid but the maple I had wasn't wide enough so after I'd ripped it I glued a strip of rosewood in the centre to widen the board and give a added visual feature. I got some great advice on how to cut the splines on the router table and that went really well. Used a bit...

My first little box - a late Christmas gift for my daughter

First time making a jewellery box and it was a great fun project. I didn't quite make my self-imposed Christmas deadline and had a few issues along the way and some helpful advice from a few people here for which I am very grateful. This box is very much influenced by one made by J Katz Moses...

Which of these Axi Extractors? needs to be small, 3 pin plug and able to use fine filter?

Thanks @frankendoodle65 It's one of those decisions, like the bandsaw that I agonised over for so long but am delighted with it so far for my needs.

How to cut box slots for splines on a box without a table saw?

@Peter Sefton Thanks for posting those photos Peter, really lovely box and i like the set-up you have for cutting the spline material. I got the box finished, not in time for Christmas sadly but in time for New Year. It was a great project and packed in lots of skills and learning. Helped me...

How to cut box slots for splines on a box without a table saw?

I got the long arbor from Wealden that has a total length of 107mm, i think that would give plenty of scope for positioning the splines. The set up worked really well.

Which of these Axi Extractors? needs to be small, 3 pin plug and able to use fine filter?

Thought I should update the thread to say what I bought. I really appreciated the photos from @frankendoodle65, they actually made me realise it would be too big for my space so I went with the AW153E with the optional fine filter. Got the extractor for £300 in the Black Friday sale and they...

How to cut box slots for splines on a box without a table saw?

I probably wasn't clear, it's the slots for the splines i want to cut. I'm happy to resaw the splines themselves on the bandsaw and plane to thickness., sorry!
