    Woodworking Apron

I'd agree with Duncan about the aprons from Lovell Workwear. Wear mine five or six days a week and it has lasted years and years. Top quality even if they cost more than others and made in UK.

Why did furniture makers put their mark on an invisible surface ?

This is part of an Edwardian pine settle I repaired a few years ago. I found this address when another piece was removed, the holes were where screws went through. The writing would never normally be seen so why was it there? Around ten years ago I repaired a mid-Georgian bureau. It was the...

Jones the Coachbuilder from Colwyn, his old saw

Many of us have old tools with previous owners names stamped on them. I've sometimes wondered who they were, where and when they used them. This old Moulson Brothers tenon saw answers this as the proud owner wrote his details on it (H P Jones Coachbuilder Old Colwyn) Is this a one off or do...

Advice on removing timber window frame in one piece

Hi , Thanks for the explanation, much better than the builders. The foundations went in and bricks up to DPC this week. This looks like the same sort of bricks as you have at ground level and are 210mm. If the rest of the wall uses the same brick size the old window will be a perfect fit. At a...

Advice on removing timber window frame in one piece

Hi Phil , It's a bit complicated , friends and family stuff. Their work is a high standard it's just the window that is an issue.

Advice on removing timber window frame in one piece

Adam Thanks for the warning, unfortunately it's too late now. Their objection seems to be more about making the new opening the right size to fit the old window, stuff about brick size and roof height. They prefer to make the opening and then get me to pay for a new window to fit it. They never...

Advice on removing timber window frame in one piece

Deema, The builders are fairly young and seem to look for the easy option. Following your and others advice I'll stick to my plan of reusing the frame. It would have to have come out anyway and this ,or a new one, would be fitted as part of their quote. If the old glazing breaks it won't add to...

Advice on removing timber window frame in one piece

Colin, The window frame's only a few years old so should have another fifty years in it, also the places I've tried that make the frames say it can take 3 to 4 months to supply a new one.

Advice on removing timber window frame in one piece

Doug If the glass breaks I'd agree that it's not a big deal. On the opening widow I tried the screw and it came out OK so the ones behind the fixed panes shouldn't be a problem. I'm not fitting the window so I'll leave that to the builders

Advice on removing timber window frame in one piece

I'm having an extension built coming out from this wall. I want the builder to remove the frame in one piece and use it in the new part. They keeping giving excuses why they can't. To me this seems a fairly easy job but needs care and planing. When the windows are opened I can see screws going...

    Chair repair advice?

The way I've done these type of repairs is to clamp 18mm strips on both sides of the rail so that they are flush with the underside of the rail and extending 10 to 15 cm past the end. You can then rout a slot in the middle of the rail about 12 mm wide (or maybe more to match the mortice ) 25-30...

please critique my chair repair plan

Just to be a bit awkward I'd suggest a slightly different procedure. First thing try to get all the front to back rails and stretcher joints apart, not just the back ones, don't forget to label each part. Try cleaning off the old glue with water, wrap scraps of wet towel around the tenons and...

This place might have something that you could adapt or make out of two mouldings Timber Mouldings | Available From Stock | Stockport Timber click on the View Our Brochure heading No one seems to have suggested making the moulding with hand planes. I've got some hollows and rounds and on many...

What are the most beautiful tools that you own

Just some basic tools but they all are a joy to use and look nice. Probably nothing special when they were made yet somehow most modern equivalents don't have the same feel. The hammer was from a cabinet makers that closed in the late 1970s and had the string binding on when I got it, don't know...

    Yankee screwdrivers

I use a smaller one most days and larger ones now and again. Always ready to use and no flat batteries. They are a bit tricky with slotted screws but so are cordless drills. They're not great for removing screws so usually go for a cordless. The top one is made by Talco in Japan that has...

Advice on best way to remove the excess material from base of this bowl?

Andy For future use here's a method I used before I got a chuck to take bowls. On a bandsaw cut the wood for the bowl and make a disc the same size out of a softwood or scrap piece about 20 mm thick. Spread glue (animal glue is best but PVA will do) on the scrap disc, on this place a disc of...

you'll never guess why my early record 8 is hard adjusting

The bottom of my lever cap has just been cleaned up and polished to make sure it sits tight, nothing has been done to reduce the tip to make it fit higher up the chip breaker.
