Very nice, I like the chunky dovetails.

    Drilling holes for dowels

Thanks all for the replies. Will give this another go. My recent attempts were for a storage box for random old toot, so it wasn't such an issue, but I want to have a crack at a bedside table next. "Spelch" - good word to describe the condition!

    Drilling holes for dowels

Apologies if this doesn;t make much sense... I've been having a do with using dowels as a method of fixing, and using the contrast between the material of the piece and the material of the dowel as a design feature. When I drill through, I get a "blow through" at the back, where the drill bit...

    Just a quickie

I like that, excellent idea! What sort of feet have you used? Can't quite see in that pic.

    Outdoor projects

Matty - you mentioned untreated oak sleepers. I had been informed that sleepers are usually pine. Is this incorrect, or are some railways more fancy than others? Anywho,, where can I get oak sleepers? Mrs DM79 wants raised beds out of sleepers. Ta!

    Sycamore Cabinet

Wow, that's really nice. Will have to add sycamore to timber I want to try and work with.

Buying a router from Ebay - fate or just bad luck?

I've bought 2 power tools on Ebay, and been disappointed both times. Won't be doing so again, unless I can inspect first.

    Guess what

For hanging necklaces on? If so, good idea, and will look great when it's filled (it looks great empty!). If not, I'm off down the patent office.

    man-made wood

I saw this on Grand Designs the other day, but can't remember what it's called... Kevin McCloud reckoned it was a manufactured timber, made from the compressed strands of softwood. It's apparently as strong as oak, but easy to cut?? Can anyone tell me what this is called, and where you can get...

Mortiser bits for a pillar drill

It didn't come with an attachment, but presumably I could buy one? To be honest, I wanted a pillar drill mainly for drilling both woodwork, and for metalwork, so if it can't be used for mortising, it's not the end of the world. However, if it can do both, then happy days!

Mortiser bits for a pillar drill

I've just bought myself a pillar drill, as (a) I wanted one for drilling, and (b) to also use for mortising. My question is, will all mortiser bits fit, i.e. do they all fit using a drill-style chuck, or do I need to get special ones that can be fitted to a drill chuck? I know it probably wont...

    Day Bed Model

That's a lovely bed, I wish I had space for something like that. Mrs DM79 would love it!

    Superglue

Thanks for this. Top tip, tip toppers! As Alan "Fluff" Freeman might have said. If he was sniffing glue. Anywho, I too was fed up with buying a tube, using a wee bit, and it then going hard and unusable. So I bought a multi-pack from Poundland, and it's lasting brilliantly. And does actually...

What sink for a solid wood worktop?

Was in Ikea a few weeks ago, and they had a nice belfast-style sink. However, you'd still have the drain issue.

    Proxxon, Dremmel mini thingies

I got a Clarke one, for polishing in akward places. The machine is what you'd exect from Clarke, but the accessories work out pretty quick. If I were to buy another, I'd look elsewhere.

    Bandsaws - what make?

Someone has suggested "Northern Tools". Anyone had any experience of them? They seem competitvely priced - any idea as to the quality? Also, my Dad's (approximately 1 million year-old) bandsaw is Inca, and is still going strong - are they still in business? A quick Google search didn't turn up...

    Bandsaws - what make?

Thanks for the feedback. I'm sorry to learn of the poor service you received, and I'm surprised re the mitre slot. On real cheapo machines that I've seen, the machining on this has been poor, but the Charnwood that I was playing with in a shop the other week seemed really nicely made, and fitted...

insulating shed and cheapest way to clad inside

What sort of impact will the rolls of loft-type isulation, or the polystyrene sheets make in terms of sound insulation? If the answer is "not much", what's the best for both sound AND heat insulation?

    Bandsaws - what make?

Pren - thanks for the reply. I took your previous advice and tried to work out what I want from a saw (to the extent of creating a spreadsheet to compare different models - sad but true!). If the Axminster can handle 80mm, then I reckon it'll more than cover my needs.
