    handle repair on old cleaver?

Like a spanner, I forgot to take a pic, but will try to remember tonight... In the meantime... I have an old cleaver, given to me by my grandfather, so it has some sentimental value. The handle is split, and I'd like to replace it but have no idea how to go about it. The existing handle has...

    Bank holiday weekend

No, a general cratfs/whittling type of thing. It was my first attempt at fitting a handle, so only got a reasonably cheap stainless blade to practice, before buying a decent carbon one. Apologies for the pic quality, it was done on a mobile. Apologies for the work quality, it was done by me...

    Bank holiday weekend

Sat - fitted vinyl flooring (boo) and glued the scales to a knife handle Sun - went for a lovely long walk in the Chilterns Mon - sanded and shaped the knife handle, and successfully dodged any more DIY

    Contrasting woods to mahogany

I had been about to suggest maple (have just made a handle for a knife from mahogany and maple) but what others have said about sycamore is very true. And on the (admittedly only one) occasion I used sycamore, it was a delight to work with.

A Clock made from Apple Tree...

A great-looking piece, and all the nicer given the source of the material. Good job.

    supplier of replacement chisel handles?

Great, thanks for that. Mine has a four-sided tang, but I don;t see why the principles wouldn;t apply. Will source a chunk of beech or similar, and give it a go! Incidentally, is this the process you'd follow for replacing a "normal" bevel/former chisel handle? Thanks!

    supplier of replacement chisel handles?

Years ago, my grandad gave me a couple of chunky Sorby pig-sticker morticing chisels. I'm finally using one on my latest project, but the other's handle is split, and needs replacing. Any idea on where I could source a replacement? I don't have a lathe to make my own. Also, are there any...

When to replace circular saw blade

This is probably one of the noddiest questions ever posted, but here goes anyway... When a circular saw blade is blunted and needs replacing, will this show on the blade, or should it be replaced before any visible deterioration occurs? I bought a circular saw to cut my new worktops, and it's...

This Week at the Boot Fair....

Are I Sorby chisels well regarded? I was given one in a box filled with random stuff. It was rusty and had no edge, but has cleaned up fine.

    Finish for waney-edged sycamore shelves?

Hello, As per the title, I've built some shelves where the flat parts are waney sycamore, and the uprights are oak. I like the unfinished look, but I feel I ought to apply a finish to the flat parts, to stop them getting grubby when dust inevitiably accumulates. I don;t want to varnish, as...

    Weldmesh wanted - Aylesbury

Thanks all. I appreciate that this won't prevent a very determined thief, I just want something visible that'll encourage a casual thief to choose an easier target elsewhere. I like that anti-smash film, may use that as well. p.s. I also like that idea re the bars - not suitable to this...

    Weldmesh wanted - Aylesbury

Hello, Ideas gratefully received - I'm after a piece of weldmesh to put on the inside of my garage window, as a theft deterrent. I've tried all sorts of places (including the interweb) but can't find anyone to sell me some. Anyone know where I could buy a piece? Needs to be 47"x31". Exact size...

Excellent work, kudos to your students. Did anyone else browse through them, with the music from Tony Hart's gallery in their head??

I believe there's a wood reclamation place in South Bucks. Can't remember where, but may be worth a Google?

Making my own external door frame

I've got a replacement door for my garage, but the hole is bigger than normal, so I need to make my own frame, rather than buying a ready-made one from B&Q (or similar). As it's going on a pre-cast garage, there won't be any shoulders (if that's the correct term - where the header extends...
