Anybody else with a wife with a daft sense of humour?

Nail varnish remover is magic stuff. A new whiteboard was put up at work, and I decided I'd "christen" it with a big drawing of a cow. Dunno why, just felt the urge. Except... the pens provided were normal marker pens, not whiteboard pens, and so would NOT wipe off, however hard I tried. 3...

clamping at an angle - any experience?

Thanks for the reply. I was reading various threads re cascamite. Some say it doesn;t flex, and so can be brittle. Is this correct? If so, I worry that it may not be suitable for this particular application? 30 mins+ would be lovely though!

clamping at an angle - any experience?

Thanks all for the replies. I dry-fitted and clamped the sides at the weekend, using wedges, and it worked well, albeit slow to get everything together. Any idea how long you've got to assemble with PVA (Evostick brand) before it starts to go off? Is there a better alternative that'll give very...

Anyone having problems using Amex with Toolstation?

Do Toolstation accept Amex? Many places don't, as Amex take a larger percentage than Mastercard or Visa. The OH has an Amex card, and regularly has to revert to an alternate.

    help with chopping board

I used virgin olive oil on my homemade chopping boards. Some say there's a chance of it going rancid*, but I've used it several times, and over a long period, and not had any issues. I haven't used olive oil on oak, but when I've wanted to get a very smooth finish with danish oil on oak, it was...

clamping at an angle - any experience?

Like it!!! After all, it just wouldn't be right if I simply made something without having to spend more on new tools than it'd have cost to just buy the something in the first place...

clamping at an angle - any experience?

Thanks all for the replies. I'm being loaned some more clamps, so will use them, but will bear all the other suggestions in mind for the future. Thanks again

clamping at an angle - any experience?

Thanks all for the replies. AndyT - unfortunately this piece is too big, and buying a board of the scale required would cost as much as buying bigger clamps. I'm certainly going to bear this in mind for a smaller scale application. Mike - thanks for the suggestion, I'll get reading up

    advice please

Does it have to be in to a solid block? A workaround would be to start with 2 thinner pieces. Cut the square/ hole in one with a coping saw, and then glue it to the "face" piece. Best/easiest method depends on what tools you have access to.

clamping at an angle - any experience?

Hi I'm making a chaise, and below is a highly technical side-on profile view, using my own patented Skrew'dUp software. I need to clamp it together whilst I glue and screw the mortices, but the incline of the legs makes it akward. Anyone had any experience of doing this? 2 ideas occur to...

    Workbench build

Wiser heads will be along shortly re your bolts vs screws question, but in case it helps, a sheet of ply screwed across the back of the frame and another across the rails will help to add a lot of rigidity. And the one across the rails makes a handy shelf.

sticking wood to bathroom tiles (glazed side)

Someone's recently asked me for suggestions for sticking wood to the outside of tiles - I won;t bore you good people with the reasons, but the wood would need to be stuck on the glazed side. Gripfill was my first thought, as that seems to stick wood to anything. However, a white product would...

    Ripping ebony

You could always use ebony for the face, and another timber behind to build up enough thickness for the rebate (or use a narrower strip behind to form the rebate)? Isn't there a local bandsaw you could borrow for this job? I seldom use a table saw, but the timber sounds a little small for the...

    Startrite 351 blade length?

Hiya Just picked up a second hand 351 - but can anyone confirm the blade length? It had 8' 6" written on the inside of the door (= 102"). but when I went to order one, most hits came back as 112" for the 351? Unfortunately, I didn't think to measure it whilst at home, and I'd like to include...

Thanks for the speedy reply, but I don't quite follow. Do you mean for bowl turning, the headstock isn't locked in position? Much obliged.

Coronet Major - morse taper stuck

FYI, a quick blast from the blowtorch enabled me to winkle the bit free. Thanks all for the suggestions. And a rummage through the box of bits that came with it revealed... a thread protector. Happy days. On the subject of majors, can anyone tell me how the swivelling head locks in the...
