Finish for wooden clothes airer? And iroko suitable?

Thanks both. I do want the wood look, and I don't mind fiddly. Will yacht varnish be up to the job of being draped in damp clothes?

Finish for wooden clothes airer? And iroko suitable?

Hi, I have been tasked by The Powers That Be to make us a bigger clothes airer. All the wooden ones I've seen have been unfinished, but if I'm making one I want it to look pretty. I was thinking yacht varnish? Also, the plan is for iroko for the uprights, and pine for the rails. Iroko has...

old Black & Decker petrol strimmer

Hi, thanks for the replies. It's got several B&D stickers on there, and a Google image search (B&D 17cc strimmer) brings up old Ebay listings for the same unit.

old Black & Decker petrol strimmer

I picked up an B&D petrol strimmer at the weekend, but I can't see a model number on it. The casing is blue, so I'm guessing it's an older model, as their new stuff seems to be green. Anyone have any experience/knowledge of these, and where the model no. may be found? I need to get a new...

    Stainless steel - what grade?

Hiya Thanks all for the replies. The brightwork will be purely decorative on the bodywork. I only mentioned the wheels as proof of my being too bone-idle to polish anything. Interesting to hear that 304 is much easier to work. I bought some stainless box section (type unknown) for an unrelated...

    Stainless steel - what grade?

Thanks. The ability to withstand neglect is what I'm after - can't summon the enthusiasm to polish the wheels

    Stainless steel - what grade?

Thanks all. The idea is to use it for brightwork on a truck instead of chrome or polished aluminium. Sounds like 316 is going to give the most longevity. Re location - as it's a truck, it'll be all over the place :)

    knives!!!

I've never made a knife (just put handles on a few blanks). I do occasionally use a blowtorch for pre-heating thick steel before welding, and agree that it's a very localised heat source. I tried to use it to heat steel rod when bending to make a decorative item, and it really wasn't suitable...

    Stainless steel - what grade?

Hi I want to make some decorative pieces that will be permanently outdoors. I want a high-shine finish. What grade of stainless steel would be best? Or is the shininess more to do with how the metal is finished, than the grade of steel? Thanks

    What Timber to Use?

Exactly why/how I ended up with AWO! A load of offcuts from Ebay for a fiver ;-)

    What Timber to Use?

I re-slatted one of these using American white oak. It's been just short of a year outside, and the slats have greyed (it happened very quickly), but no obvious deterioration to the wood otherwise.

Gravel/shingle "strip" along the edge of conservatory

Good point. There is guttering, that feeds in to a water butt. However, if that weren't there, the shingle would be where the water would end up.

Gravel/shingle "strip" along the edge of conservatory

p.s. I appreciate that always keeping the lawn at a buzz cut, well below the damp course, would mean this couldn't be a problem. However, that's not realistically going to happen!

Gravel/shingle "strip" along the edge of conservatory

Howdy We moved in to a house with a conservatory. Along the outside of the exerior wall is a strip covered in shingle, with grass on the other side of that. The OH wants to do away with the shingle, so it can simply be mowed, instead of weeded. However, would grass make a moisture "bridge"...

Best filler for wood cracks in Live Edge piece

I've used some waney edged sycamore for shelves. I left the bark on, as I like that look, and have noticed that bits have dropped off over time, without being touched/knocked etc. Not trying to influence you either way with yur project, just wanted to let you know that sycamore bark is not...

Much obliged, there's a drop-off point just round the corner from my office! Cheers

    Courier/delivery recommendations please

Hi, Can any of you good people recommend a decent courier? I need to send a parcel that's 3kg, so Royal Mail want £13.00 (as opposed to £2.90 for a 2kg parcel). I'd prefer one with a high street presence, so I can drop it off in my lunch break. And not MyHermes (or my herpes, as they ought to...
