Modern alternative to Butinox 2 for exterior woodwork

Cheers. It looks like water based is going to be the way to go. All the products mentioned require a primer, do I read that correctly? A slight downside is choice of colour. The old Butinox was basically available in brown, so the only decision was dark or light. These new paints are...

    Wood worktop problem

I don't think it would work trying to clamp it closed, and if it did the wood would be under strain trying to open back up again. If it's stable in this shape I'd be included to cut and inset a bit of Oak to give a tight surface. Do you have offcuts of the worktop to play with?

    How to deal with logs

If left in one piece they will split whatever you do. This because it will shrink different amounts in the three dimensions. For example Beech will shrink about twice as much around the circumference as it does along the radius. Painting the end grain won't prevent this, all that will do is...

Modern alternative to Butinox 2 for exterior woodwork

Hi, I need to apply something to the exterior woodwork of the garage, this is a mix of new untreated wood with some existing wood with and without existing paint finish. In the past we've used Butinox 2, a spirit based paint that we could apply to everything from whether planed or sawn. No...

    1/4" router bit

Assuming you're using the router in a table, you could use a narrower groove cutter and take two passes. That's what I'd do, I don't like dimensions to be dictated by the size a tool happens to be.

    Diamond sharpening, buying advice !

I may be a lone voice here, but does it really matter if a water stone isn't flat? I gave up flattening mine a while ago, and I find my moving around the stone I can get the edge I want. Mine are King double sided, bought I guess 20 years ago when I started on the journey that Jacob described...

    Chisel buying advice

Funny you should say that. I bought my chainsaw used from a private seller, and he posted it with the tank 1/2 full of petrol. I can't remember if there was any bar oil.

How to make this moulding - recommendations/advice welcome

Thanks. I'm a bit worried about terminology if it came to getting individual H or R planes, especially by mail order. For example on Ebay at the moment there are two listings for "No.2 Hollow" but of those one is actually a Round (cuts a hollow) and the other looks like 3/16" radius rather...

How to make this moulding - recommendations/advice welcome

Thanks. I'd love a set of hollows and rounds, but don't have anything like that at the moment and I don't really know how I'd go about getting a set. Don't they cut a constant radius though? Or do you use different sizes and sort of blend them together. I need to follow up the idea though...

How to make this moulding - recommendations/advice welcome

Hi, Family member has asked if I can make up matching mouldings for this chest of drawers. The first picture shows a sample draw with the moulding missing, I think there are some other sections missing or damaged (but I'm not going to ask until I know I can make it). Second picture shows the...

    Looking for Wheels for Planer/Thicknesser

Thanks for all the comments. The advantage of retractable wheels as in my first post, is that when the machine is in use it will have all four feet on the ground as usual. I'm not sure I want to watch that video but I can well believe that something Bad could happen if the machine moves...

    Looking for Wheels for Planer/Thicknesser

That's true, I should have said. It's an Elu EPT1901. The footprint so to speak is 620 x 520mm measured to the outside of the legs at ground level. I can't think of how to get an accurate weight, it's pretty easy to lift up one end so maybe 35kg or so in total.

    Looking for Wheels for Planer/Thicknesser

Hi, I'm trying to make my various tools moveable, to best make use of a restricted space. The planer thicknesser is one of the worst as although it's not that light it's awkward to move, and in use it needs space both ends. Ideally a pair of retractable wheels on two if it's legs would do the...

    Advice for fixing a Parkinson's 16 / Record 53 vise

I have a Parkinson 15 "Perfect Vice" and that bit broke in the same place. From memory the two main guide rods sat in sockets in the casting, the screwed rod passed through and was secured with washer and split pin. I made a replacement from plywood, one piece with the three holes drilled...
