How do you soften edges of ply/MDF furniture?

As I prepare for a big (ish) home install, I’d love to know how people knock down the edges of ply/MDF shelving/cabinetry. Going for a simple, clean, straight/modern look so really I want the edges to be as square-looking as possible but not constantly getting dinged. Alastair at Freebird uses...

Cheers! I’d like to say “it will be never happen again” but that would be tempting fate…

Oak worktop coat hooks and shoe rack

It was inspired by this from John Lewis btw. Ugly screws showing!

Oak worktop coat hooks and shoe rack

Overhauling our home office and bought some oak worktop to tart up an ikea desk setup, but deliberately oversized to give me enough for these coat hook… boards? Plaques? Plinths?! whatever! And a shoe rack. Shoe rack made of reclaimed pine and some Freecycled chair legs. Reminded me I hate...

    I hit a dog

A bench dog, with tracksaw on MFT top  I suspected I'd do it at some point, but didn't think it would be so soon (new to MFT/dogs/rails/tracksaw). Only for a second, and they're alloy, and it's a TCT blade (DeWalt 48T 165mm 2.2 kerf) - still cuts fine. Can someone please tell me they've...

    DWS520KTR (DeWalt plunge saw)

Update on the update: I was half-right. The clamps initially fit into the rail but don’t slide along it as they aren’t narrow enough at the 90° bend. Only a tiny bit of grinding required and they fit perfectly.

How do you cut mitres on the end of long components?

Next week is the big fitted office build, and so that I can put a bevel on the strip wood supporting some shelves, I’m mitering the ends. Obviously the first cut is no issue, but when they all need to be the same length, any tips on cutting the second mitred end? I have a mitre saw but...

    DWS520KTR (DeWalt plunge saw)

So I think I might actually be going crazy. I vividly remember the rail clamps from Banggood not fitting in DeWalt track because it was so annoying. went to start the laborious and messy job of grinding some off, digging out the stone wheels for bench grinder etc, only to offer them up again to...

    DWS520KTR (DeWalt plunge saw)

Still in two minds about this saw. I bought it primarily because it was an amazing deal; a little over £300 when most other brand packages are well over £400, and I use and trust DeWalt in general. It seems to perform well so far, but my issues are: 1) It’s noisy! Sounds rough as ar5eholes on...

Cabinet construction and mounting ply shelves

Hi guys - 3 questions in one thread for efficiency! The sheet materials have arrived for a wall of fitted cabinets/shelves (all 650kg of them..). 18mm MDF for cabinets, 18mm birch ply for shelves. 1) Re. cabinets (500x400x350mm, 800x400x350mm, 6mm backs) - I’ve assumed all along I’ll dowel and...

What material for fitted office upright dividers?

Thanks all, especially tip off re. birch ply. It will all be painted.

What material for fitted office upright dividers?

I'm taking on probably the biggest cabinetry project I've done so far, partly the fault of Peter Millard (!) and partly the astronomical cost of any trade work at the moment! It will be a whole wall's worth, divided into 3 sections of nearly equal width - left side, bookshelves (18mm ply on...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Designed this on SketchUp. Learnt some hard lessons - don’t fix sheet materials to a roof you’re planning to lift yourself, and don’t cut your roof felt to size before laying it. But still, this was my first go at framing, and biggest project to date, so I’m pretty proud of it.

    Startrite SP147 bandsaw

As Robbo says, the guides are too far forward, they’ll be catching the teeth which is why it’ll be sparking (and ruining the blade). If it’s sparking from the back, that bearing will be ceased and can be replaced.

Is this the cut you’d expect from a 4 TPI bandsaw blade?

Nick - I thought I’d DMed you but have maybe left a “profile comment”?! Sorry - can’t work out DMs on this site? Will learn I’m sure!

Is this the cut you’d expect from a 4 TPI bandsaw blade?

Thanks all, and Nick, I’ll be in touch! Will try a Tuffsaw blade - I’ll be delighted if it’s the blade because everything else seems fine, so would rather not discover it’s some major part that’s warped and will cost hundreds to replace. The old owner sounded genuinely impressed by the saw and...

Is this the cut you’d expect from a 4 TPI bandsaw blade?

Hi all, newcomer here! Currently re-arranging workshop (who isn’t ;)) and have replaced a hardworking 10” Ferrex bandsaw with a used 14” Jet JWBS. It’s a 2007 model and presumably European; most info/videos for 14” Jet BSs are for US models which look substantially different. Overall, happy...
