    cap iron too short?

It seems I may have worn out the cap iron on my old Record 05 1/2. I recently purchased a new iron for this plane as the old (probably original one) was getting a bit short. Setting the new one up - which is from Ray Iles, and is very nice - it would appear the cap iron is too short to work...

Help in identifying a species of timber

My vote for the first one is probably utile/sipo or khaya. One of the African mahoganoids. That's what I decided with something similar looking that was a former banister handrail.

A year of woodworking as a sabbatical sounds good if you can afford it. Most PhD's (in the UK) take 4 years these days and in the sciences students usually arrange funding about 9 months ahead of start date. It may be very different in your field, but don't leave it until the last minute.

OP - What subject would you be doing postgraduate research in if you stick with your current/old plan? If this is learning for learning's sake, a PhD would be a mistake. If you enjoy the subject, it's an enjoyable slog, but doesn't leave much room for hobbies. If you have some flexibility in...

Hikoki M12V2 vs Triton TRA001 - is the Hikoki a red herring in my choice?

Sorry, quite right. I should really proof read better. The M12VE is what I meant to write. This one: M12VE | HIKOKI Powertools UK

Hikoki M12V2 vs Triton TRA001 - is the Hikoki a red herring in my choice?

Have you looked at the Hitachi/Hikoki M12V2? I have one of these and I don't see any reason to purchase the M12V2 over it unless you're fond of star trek. It's cheaper, lighter and has the same power.

How Necessary is a Specialised Scrub Plane?

Not being familiar with the European wooden planes, I had missed the fact that length is essentially the same for these. What length do you recommend for a wooden jack plane? I expect this may be somewhat shorter than I had imagined and the distinction I had made between a jack and scrub plane...

    Drilling dog holes (by hand?)

I recommend star-m auger bits for this. Designed to work in a battery drill, but can work ok in a brace too. https://www.workshopheaven.com/star-m-japanese-f-type-bit-singles.html

Has anyone mastered the Hovel pencil plane?

I felt ridiculous spending £5 on a fancy pencil sharpener, but it brings a smile to my face every time I use it. I winced when I saw the price of this thing, but I guess it has the capacity to work in the same way (i.e. to bring joy as well as well as produce a sharp pencil). I have no advice on...

How Necessary is a Specialised Scrub Plane?

DW - I'm not sure I quite follow. I think we can all agree that continental Europe managed to be quite productive in terms of pre-industrial woodwork. It would appear that the wooden scrub plane was quite popular during this time, so there must be some utility in a scrub plane. I can see how a...

Bosch GCM 12 GDL - Replace laser with saw shadow line

Indeed. If you're selling these, I guess it won't hurt to include a disclaimer that you shouldn't look directly at the LED though.

Bosch GCM 12 GDL - Replace laser with saw shadow line

    >the hazard from very bright LEDS remains the same. Yes, absolutely. High power LEDs should not be considered safe to look at directly. I assume you'd have to be fairly acrobatic to be able to stare directly at this once installed in the saw though?

Bosch GCM 12 GDL - Replace laser with saw shadow line

Nice use of 3D printing. I'd ignore the Class 2 rating - that's for lasers and the Dewalt sticker posted by Sandyn must be from an older model saw - the IEC standard has been revised a few times since 1993 and LEDs are often not included in this standard (or have a laser rating) any more. The 2...

How Necessary is a Specialised Scrub Plane?

My scrub plane is a very crude thing and works much better across grain than with it. That said, I can see how a more refined scrub plane could make quite work of this sort of carpentry.

How Necessary is a Specialised Scrub Plane?

I have an improvised scrub plane that I use in the same way as Jacob. I have tried the same work with a jack plane (5.1/2) and for me the scrub plane is quicker. I don't have a particularly radical camber on my jack plane though. I found the following to be interesting while thinking about the...

    Wanted Stanley No8 plane

I have a 24" wooden jointer that works beautifully. You can still pick these up quite cheaply, so might be worth considering as an alternative to the new fangled Stanley and Records.

Has anyone ever seen a Startrite drill head elevating mechanism?

Yes, it will be difficult to lift if the head is relatively high already. Sounds like you need a mechanical solution. I've seen a pulley and a counterweight in the column too. It's a neat solution if you have enough column height above the head (I don't) and can either make the pulley swivel or...
