    Crane required for new workshop

That's going to take up quite a bit of space. What don't you like about an overhead/gantry crane?

    Corian/Minerva/Granite or something else?

RE: 800x700 We were planning on using some sort of composite when we did our kitchen, but as we cut the work top into a window opening behind the sink, it required a piece that was wider/deeper than standard (as this couldn't be reliably joined). This pushed the price up considerably and made it...

    Dovetail saw - Crosscut?

The footprint saw can be resharpened. If you don't like the crosscut pattern (or when it gets blunt), change it to rip.

    Creocote(aka creosote substitute)

Ah, that's different. If you read the label, I'm pretty sure it instructs one not use on furniture/things that will be handled (check as my memory may be playing tricks). I assume it leaches something that is fairly toxic and is intended for use on decking, fences, etc. that you don't touch too...

    Creocote(aka creosote substitute)

I have used the light brown version of this on a number of external timber projects. Seems to work pretty well. It dries overnight and doesn't leave a sticky surface. It doesn't form a hard finish as far as I can tell. Smells pretty bad and appears to be diesel with some additives.

Fair enough. As long as the client's happy, then all is good.

Very nice will1983, but is the top left door hinged on the diagonal?

Which tools to square small blocks of wood? (Beginner)

Perhaps another option would be to use a Cooper's plane? Can't imagine these are easy to find, but if you can fix/hold a longer bench plane upside down, you could fake it. http://www.handplane.com/60/hand-planin ... items/amp/ What do you use to hold the timber when you're carving?

Which tools to square small blocks of wood? (Beginner)

A number 4 is a good all round plane and is long enough to straighten a 12" board. A block plane can also be helpful if the pieces are too small, or irregular to fit in a vice as you use these one handed. I would pick one of these (e.g. a 60 1/2 or 9 1/2) over a number 3.

Secure a board to be planed.

Agreed, holdfasts are of limited use in planing boards. Some type of planing stop such as a dog or a batten held by a holdfast is all you need. However, my point, which probably want clear, is that if you want to use dogs, you need holes, and holes then also allow you to use holfasts, which are...

Secure a board to be planed.

For a Nicholson style bench with an apron, the space under the top is largely unaccessible unless you build a drawer. You might as well embrace the dog hole as then at least you can use this space for something - holdfasts.

Timber choice for a large wooden greenhouse

Durability is quite dependent on where the timber came from: https://www.trada.co.uk/wood-species/ce ... d-british/ https://www.trada.co.uk/wood-species/douglas-fir/ Will concede that WRC can be as durable as Douglas Fir. Sometimes.

Timber choice for a large wooden greenhouse

Are you making the window frames out of the same wood? If so, will Douglas Fir be stable enough? It's certainly not as rot resistant as WRC.

    Any boffins here?

Not just a good answer, but nicely explained too. Thanks.

    Any boffins here?

I'm a physical chemist. Even do the bit of research on glue. This hasn't really equipped me to answer your question. Will go and do a bit of an experiment and get back to you. Suspect the answer will involve surface tension, bubbles and trapped air though.

    fretboard radius plane?

How often will you have to sharpen when you are mostly using ebony, rosewood and hard maple? Sharpening may not be quite as easy as changing the sandpaper on a radiused sanding block...

    Virtual machines

I have used virtualbox at work for many years. It's very good at doing what it does, but it's not a simple fix for malware, etc. I use it to run Windows as a "guest" on Mac and Linux "host" machines. You could do the same and not save your Windows session (assuming it's Windows malware you are...

    third flood in two weeks

As someone living a few miles down the A6 from Stockport, I can confirm that the weather of late has been somewhat unprecedented. While it's cold comfort, I know quite a few folk with garages at the bottom of a sloping drive that have had repeated flooding this summer. A temporary dam at the...

    I made a Tenortrope

Very nice. How is it tuned - 5ths or something else? Construction would be nice to see. Curious how you thick the sides are and how you aranged the sound well.
