Heat gun useful? Gluing in cold workshop and other stuff

Wood had quite high thermal mass (specific heat capacity). Takes a long time to heat up, but also takes a long time to cool down again. If you leave it under the tent for long enough to actually heat up then you should be good for a glue up.

    Holdfasts types and uses!

Not sure they are better, but you could get them made to you own specification - diameter and/or reach.

    Holdfasts types and uses!

That's what I use. Made by a friend of a friend. So, I guess you need to befriend a blacksmith.

Thanks. Not ideal somewhere with limited headroom then.

Heat gun useful? Gluing in cold workshop and other stuff

Sorry for the hijack, but how hot do these get? Essentially, can you burn yourself on the grill? Back to the OP. I have used a hot air gun to warm up the timber before a glue up. Not sure it helped much. Heater would be my preference.

Pillar drill dimensions - looking for something compact

Does anyone have the dimensions for the Startrite Mercury? Look like another contender and significnatly cheaper than a semi-modern Meddings. Edit. 23", so on the list. http://www.lathes.co.uk/startrite-drills/

Where to buy british hardwoods in/near Derbyshire

Gorton do sawn board. How dry they are may be variable. https://www.treestation.co.uk/product/hardwood-planks/ I'm not sure they'll deliver to Matlock though.

    Hayward Roughing Plane

Very nice. For someone who doesn't use dowels very much, could you describe how you manage to get 8 of them to line up nicely?

Pillar drill dimensions - looking for something compact

Thanks very useful. There is certainly some attraction to going down the route, not lest that if I don't get on with one it isn't a significant financial outlay. Not aware of any decent car boot sales in my neck of the woods, but remarkable ebay prices are still cheaper than a good old electric...

    Workbench Tension/Vibration

How wet was the timber when you built it? Or put differently, how long did you store it before you started building? The reason I ask is that it may have shrunk considerably and the screws are now holding the joints fractionally apart. Can you reset these?

Pillar drill dimensions - looking for something compact

OK, good to hear some counter arguement. I take it you have an older version of this: https://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-c ... ill-105105

Pillar drill dimensions - looking for something compact

I did briefly consider a hand cranked model as I primarily do hand tool work, but largely discounted them as I don't know anything about them. They certainly fit the size budget. And look cool. I take it they are actually genuinely useful then?

Well as I said, I'm not totally opposed to buying new. What do you have?

Thanks Lons. That looks perfect. Will put on the watch list. TWW - thanks. What I thought on both counts.

Pillar drill dimensions - looking for something compact

Looks like all the bigger new drills all use a 3 pulley system to get more speed options. Expect this comes at the cost of extra depth?

Pillar drill dimensions - looking for something compact

Right , have seen those. Have also seen plenty of recommendations to steer clear. Previous threads here about pillar drills invariably lead to a recommendation for an old Meddings, Fobcio, etc machine, which I'm happy to do. Problem is that the old catalogues for these machines don't always...

Pillar drill dimensions - looking for something compact

I'm in the market for a pillar drill. Preference is to buy something old, but it must be as compact as possible as space is precious. Leaning towards a bench drill rather than floor standing model, but more important is the depth (front-to back), which must be less than about 24". Width and...
