    Tools for children

Spoke shaves are pretty good too.

    Tools for children

A coping saw and a whittling knife are my 7 year-old's go-to tools.

Mine must get the planar depth a little deeper as I get 44 x 19mm.

    another wood identification please

Thanks all. It's becoming the stretchers/apron on a coffee table made with a purlin that that was formerly holding up our roof (pre loft conversion). I think that's probably in keeping with the never again-ness of these timbers. I think I have some more too, but will have to have another look...

    another wood identification please

Ok, that seems to fit. Thanks. Was/is it used in furniture much?

    another wood identification please

I'm struggling to ID this stuff. It's reclaimed, I think, from a wardrobe that must have been fairly old. Smell is quite strong. A bit like pine, but not entirely familiar. Works beautifully until you hit a knot. Tear out isn't too bad, but the resin has crystallised in some of places, which...

Jet Chip Extractor and Household Power Supply - Tripping

Has it always done this? If not, you may have a snubber (capacitor) that's failed open.

    Which 1/2 router? My first!

The collet on the M12VE is absolutely fine once you know how to use it. You do have to read the manual to find out this out thought, as it's not intuitive.

    Which 1/2 router? My first!

Hikoki = Hitachi. I have the M12VE with a Hitachi badge. It's a no frills beast (well, it does have soft start) and there is little else at that price point. Only irritation is that it needs an after market means of doing height adjustment in a table and doesn't come with a dust extraction...

Elevating my ability - on-line courses? Rob Cosman?

Devil's advocate: Do you need educating, or would practice suffice - when did you last put some time aside to build a box or piece of furniture?

    Safety Gear for Children

As a kid we used to play chicken with the electric fences. Essentially you won if you held on the longest. Camera flash capacitors on the other hand still scare me. Back to kid's PPE. +1 to using adult sized eat defenders. My 7 year old recently told me his kid versions don't work as well as mine.

    Band Saw tramming advice.

What shape is the blade in? Can you cut in a straight line freehand, without the fence?

    Inca Bandsaw advice

From memory, putting the tensioner back together is a little counter intuitive as one of the pieces seems be go in upside down. It's also quite fiddly. There is an exploded diagram in the manual, attached, which may help.

    Sanitary ware ...

My son thinks the olden days were any time before he was born. He's seven. I guess it's all relative.

    Sanitary ware ...

Thanks for the excellent history lesson. Will still be swearing at the design every time the tap comes lose and starts twisting though.

finally tried out my tuff saw blade

    >"What manner of Silly person would attempt to fit the blade upside down?" I managed to put a blade on upside down once. It still worked, but not very well. In my defence, I have an Inca, which is back to front, so blades requre turning inside out. I guess I was distracted that day. Has...

How to calculate honing guide protrusion?

    >You could resort to your school geometry, using a right-angle triangle and Pythagoras I started writing a reply in this vain. It requires some initial quite accurate and awkward measuring (for the opposite length) and then a scientific calculator (or web app) for the tan-1 calculation. I...

    Cutting threads on Handle bolts

That knob takes me back. Turner was an Aussie company. Does the plane have an aluminium frog? Either way, it was probably made as Australia was moving towards the metric system, so thread could be Imperial or metric. Edit, Bod best me to it. I'm pretty sure you could buy Turner planes into the...
