    Amazon versus Screwfix

Screwfix is Kingfisher and, until they sell it, Toolstation is owned by Wickes (as is Travis Perkins). Ie believe Toolstation was started though by same family who started Screwfix

Tent / Marquee as medium-term workshop?

While building my summerhouse I’ve had to do loads of work and store things under two gazebos so a tent would be a luxury. Advantage of the gazebos is lengths of wood can be swung around only needing to avoid the legs rather than sides of a tent. The mitre saw on stand has been stored outside...

Table Saws - Best on a budget?

I have the Evolution from Screwfix which was under £200 when I got it and I’ve been happy with it with 60 &100 tooth blades from Saxon. It’s cut everything pretty well that I’ve put through it up to 75mm deep. Mitre isn’t great but fence seems reasonable and straight. The fact that it all...

How would you rate the UK's handling of this pandemic?

No doubt that would help education but what about the laptops for all those families who don't have or can't afford one? What about the schools who don't have the means to fully support and take to remote learning (let alone the teachers and/or the capability and willingness of kids to learn...

    What happens now?

I was officially home based (consultant) and yes, could get pretty much anything sorted equipment-wise, as can my wife who WFH. Both employed by big companies. I was thinking more of smaller businesses and the situation people who normally work in offices are in. Ie those without home desks...

How would you rate the UK's handling of this pandemic?

Hindsight of course is a wonderful thing but in reality I doubt in this country there would have been a fundamental difference in the actions taken by any party in power as at the end of the day, the civil service are still the same, the scientists are the same and as is the NHS. Of course...

    What happens now?

The fixed amount is the easiest thing to do and will be accepted by tax office. Doing the proportion of house electricity/gas and all other things requires far more evidence. For those wfh (vs a limited company with home as a registered address for example) it’s not worth trying to claim...

    What happens now?

Having worked in IT for 25+ years I’ve done tons of WFH as well as my different employers’ buildings, client sites (home and abroad), temp offices etc. Although an industry where it’s been pretty easy to work remotely for many years, it really does still depend on the individual doing the work...

    NAIL GUN

I run mine on proper Ryobi batteries and it’s never failed to fire even when battery running low in these temps so you may be right about the third-party batteries causing your issues (or you’re just unlucky!)

    NAIL GUN

Can’t actually disagree with bits of that - it is big and quite heavy. Not found it too slow though. Does what I need though. Oddly, when working outside, the dogs (inside) hate it yet are fine with the Paslode. There must be just a difference in the type of ‘bang’ they make. The Paslode I’d...

    NAIL GUN

I’ve got a Ryobi air strike 16g which I’m perfectly happy with for what I bought it for and got it for a decent price. The amount it gets the Brad in does vary depending on the wood and how perfectly you’re holding it against the surface but it only needs a light tap with a hammer to finish off...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

A lovely and well made tool. Would have come in handy for some bits I’ve had to cut recently. Catch 22 with making the spacing pieces though? Did you not need a tool like that to make the spacers for the tool? 😉🤔

    Another Joke

Great to see that one come to light again. Don’t think I’ve heard it/seen it for 20+ years!

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Looks lovely. You do realise that for the next birthday, anniversary, Xmas etc she’ll expect you to buy enough large sparkly things to fill it ........😉 Then you can make a strongroom to store it in for security

    Disk Storage

I just about followed most of the above posts but what surprises me is the sheer amount of data some o& you have. I’m a keen photographer and have large number of files (digital era as well as scanned negatives and slides etc) and obviously all of those are backed up more than once via NAS/Raid...

In need of of a Canon scanner stop

For documents to OCR almost any scanner will do as separate software also available. For slides and negatives IF you want a scanner that does everything then you’ll need to look fo4 one which has separate carriers for the negatives and slides. However, if you’ve got a digital camera and tripod...

    Your Cars

Like any handmade car money has to be spent on keeping them in good order but reliability has never really been an issue for mine.

Nope, my name previously was G265XTN but it was quite difficult to pronounce so changed it via deed-poll 😀

    Your Cars

Current day to day vehicle is this. Great (except economy) and bonkers. Not mine in photo but same as mine. 2.5 tons in 3.5 secs is perfect for run to shops and timber merchants.... : N The TVR I’ve had 23 years so must like it.... Best cars owned, like others here, I’d say my Saab’s 900S...
