    Series 3: Britain's Best Woodworker

My point was more the other two had quadrilateral tops and would fit better into a square room with fixed width worktops (i.e. like 99.9% of actual kitchens) The weird angular one would have loads of space around some parts of some sides and very little where the points were (and that's asking...

    Series 3: Britain's Best Woodworker

I really wish you were wrong on that one Adam... I think the right person won this one as well. I'd argue it was also the most practical, plenty of space to sit at and nicely finished. Also nice and easy to incorporate into a normal kitchen design/layout. The others were hideously impractical...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Thanks. To be fair there was so much choice when I last went up and it was all very reasonably priced. I just loved the colour on this one and in terms of yield it was more or less perfect; I think I only had one extra piece from where I'd resawn the insert and that was it, the rest became box...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Finished this a couple of weeks ago, my first niece/nephew is on the way so I've made this memory box for my sister: All made from a single piece of sycamore I found in Albion Timber; it was thick enough I could rip parts in half and make that continuous pattern all round the bottom. First...

    decent hand plane wanted /recommendations

+1 for a restorer. I've purchased "new" planes from Axminster in the early days of my hobby (4.5 and a 7); I'd say they are more or less as good as the wood rivers, etc. but they are heavy as ****. My go-to planes these days are a ~1950 Record no.4 I restored myself (lot of effort), and a...

    Wood ID (antique sideboard)

Pretty confident that is European Oak rather than Red Oak. Grain pattern looks wrong for ash and you can see very oak-like medullary rays on some of the pieces. Second the comment about wire wool or any other ferrous shavings/dust/etc. as iron will cause the timber to react/stain

What do you do with all those scraps of timber?

If you can put enough similar pieces together those sizes sound ideal for box making (especially if you can resaw some of the thicker sections). Or you could make two of the sides and/or part of the lid out of contrasting timbers to make it more interesting...

    Round metal bands for clocks

Another thing you could try would be to ring a steel stockist and ask if they can saw off short lengths of tube. Might not work for a couple of pieces and you'd be more restricted on size but is worth considering if you need quantity. (In my experience maybe try someone like C Roberts, NTS...

    Series 3: Britain's Best Woodworker

You're definitely right about that. For every series that has come out there's been a thread on here, and the amount of butthurt in said threads is hilarious...

    Jewellery box hardware

Thank you all, that gives me plenty to look through. I'm away this weekend but I'll have a proper look when I get home.

    Jewellery box hardware

Thanks Phil. I've had a look through the website and whilst I am more than prepared to believe they're charging a fair price for what it is, £100.00 for a lock and hinges is well out of my budget. I was ideally looking for something closer to £20/30 for the set...

    Jewellery box hardware

Hi all, I'm making a memory box ~300x200x100ish and looking for hardware for it. It's going to be made from ~10-12mm thick sycamore. Given this forum is such a treasure trove of information and suppliers I'm hoping someone can recommend me a decent place to get them from. Ideally I'm looking...

Old Stanley’s or new Quangsheng planes? Which do I need?

@Joe1975 Bite his hand off!! A good source of reconditioned and ready to go is Tooltique, they put up new stock a couple of times a week and it tends not to hang about. I've had a few of these and can't fault the quality of what I got, certainly better than my ability to restore planes...

Old Stanley’s or new Quangsheng planes? Which do I need?

Just to reinforce what everyone else is saying, a vintage no.5 (or 5.5 if preferred, but they're actually harder to source well) as your general dogsbody plane paired with a finely set no.4 for finishing will easily cover you for 90% of jobs. You don't need shoulder or router planes for general...

Anybody seen this in an offcut of Oak

It's clearly not gone to plan if that were the case... 😄

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Cookbook stand I've made for my wife as a Christmas present. This was made from oak flooring offcuts a colleague gave me and is probably the first proper project I've done in hardwood, and my first proper attempt at carving. Quite chuffed with that.

To whomever is stealing my pencils..

It's a Hitchhiker's Guid reference, albeit not very well executed... (the answer to the ultimate question of Life, the Universe & Everything is 42; this answer is also meaningless without knowing the Ultimate Question...)

What wood to use for Paul sellers workbench

Good shout that, though I've found when they do become availabe in South Yorkshire they almost always have a silly price (£200-300+) because a couple of years ago Hipsters have started hoovering them all up to use them as Kitchen Islands and side tables...

Router lift idea - may be of interest to someone?

Given the max capacity is 5kg (~50N), I suspect this will only work with lighweight routers. I haven't measured it, but I suspect the spring force on a typical plunge router is more than 50N...
