Pretty confident that is European Oak rather than Red Oak. Grain pattern looks wrong for ash and you can see very oak-like medullary rays on some of the pieces. Second the comment about wire wool or any other ferrous shavings/dust/etc. as iron will cause the timber to react/stain

If you can put enough similar pieces together those sizes sound ideal for box making (especially if you can resaw some of the thicker sections). Or you could make two of the sides and/or part of the lid out of contrasting timbers to make it more interesting...

Another thing you could try would be to ring a steel stockist and ask if they can saw off short lengths of tube. Might not work for a couple of pieces and you'd be more restricted on size but is worth considering if you need quantity. (In my experience maybe try someone like C Roberts, NTS...

@Joe1975 Bite his hand off!! A good source of reconditioned and ready to go is Tooltique, they put up new stock a couple of times a week and it tends not to hang about. I've had a few of these and can't fault the quality of what I got, certainly better than my ability to restore planes...

Just to reinforce what everyone else is saying, a vintage no.5 (or 5.5 if preferred, but they're actually harder to source well) as your general dogsbody plane paired with a finely set no.4 for finishing will easily cover you for 90% of jobs. You don't need shoulder or router planes for general...

Cookbook stand I've made for my wife as a Christmas present. This was made from oak flooring offcuts a colleague gave me and is probably the first proper project I've done in hardwood, and my first proper attempt at carving. Quite chuffed with that.

Given the max capacity is 5kg (~50N), I suspect this will only work with lighweight routers. I haven't measured it, but I suspect the spring force on a typical plunge router is more than 50N...
